I'd like to know more about the "withholding water" before making a real decision.

Maryland has a good rule that on "code red" air quality days, no schools can practice in full pads after 10:30. On the hot days, our coaches told us to get water whenever we wanted and required everyone to get water during water breaks.

If the water denying was a "finish the drill then get water", it's a lot different from "suck it up bitch."

I'll just put it this way, I'm sure glad we don't practice in full pads too much anymore and when we do during 2 a days it is between 8 and 10:30.

That coach was way out of line, even if he screaming at the player to suck it up, ect. he should have noticed something was wrong.

Makes me happy that I have such good coaches.

        You're lucky.

When our coach told us that the state said we can't practice in full pads after 10:30, we were ecstatic.

Well, that was until he told us that practice starts at 6:30.

Our coaches really care about us, but they still coach us. They just aren't dumb, I guess.

Normally we just practice 2 and a half hours with shoulder pads (full pads some days) and our afternoon practice was just helmets and practice jerseys for about 2 hours. Afternoon practice can suck, though, because managers slack off and don't get water to lineman fast enough and we are the ones actually doing drills and stuff. Everyone else gets to do special teams.

IIRC we didn't go full pads one day during 2 a days, but we wore girdles and shorts, we pretty much went full speed anyway so our knees got bruised a lot. It was kind of weird, but we had 3 torn acl's one week into two a days (2 on first day) the year before and our coach didn't want to take a chance. It didn't really affect us too much that season, we played really well still and were more actually more physical than the year before.

I hate the cliche football coach, the cliche drill sergeant, etc. They aren't making you better, and they aren't cool because they know how to raspy up their voice and can say "ladies" to men. IMO if they can't think of a better way to discipline their athletes or make them better, they aren't deserving of the job. I didn't read the article and I don't care what it says, but I guarantee this is that kind of coach. I hope after this incident and his indictment, assuming he ever gets a coaching job again, he thinks twice before telling his "ladies" to "quit y'er whinin' and gimme twenty."

just to share some other info on this, its not the first time this coach has been under fire in regards to witholding water. Its been stated that he's often used withholding water as a punishment for players that screwed up in drills, didn't play hard, or what have you.

That may be the case but when it comes to your health, you are responsible, Not the coach. The Coach should obviously be fired but the kid Could have gotten Water, Unless the coach physically restrained him. The Coach is a idiot though, Having spent a couple summers in the hottest part of the Planet I can tell you how important water is.

while what you say is true, how many young men are going to "stand up" to their coach and disobey him? They want to play the game and "please" their coach.

And the coach is responsible for their health. He is in "custody" of minors. Its his job to first and foremost do whats in the best interest of their health. Its no different then a bus driver, day care worker, teacher, babysitter, or what have you. The coach is responsible for this death. And if there's any justice at all, he'll pay for his crime.

Mike Francessa was talking about this, it seems that this coach played big time college football and had a tryout with an NFL team, I believe the Giants, I don't remember, but it doesn't matter.

What does matter is that with his background there's no way he didn't know about the dangers of withholding water, that just makes him stupid, a sadist, or both. Negligent homicide? I don't know about that, it is debatable though, reckless endangerment is what I bet he pleads to.

My offensive line coach was an All-American and played 10 seasons in the pros. That doesn't mean he pushes us to that extent. We work hard, and the we rest hard. If he thinks there something wrong, he'll be the first one to pull a player out of a drill.

As a coach, you have to push your players, but this coach obviously didn't know when to stop.

Did it ever say if the player complained about being sick? I mean the coach won't stop unless there is serious signs. You can't just stop everything because one person wants water and can't tough it out. It's sad he died, but if he just fell over with no warning there is nothing the coach could have done.
