    Moving to California

So I will stay in San Antonio for a couple more weeks then go to Washington for about a month then finally move to Travis AFB near Fairfield. Anybody from that area have any suggestions on things to do and such. I will live on base but hopefully in a year and half or so I will get to move off base. I am single so just an apartment would fine if somebody knows of a good area. Thanks

    Re: Moving to California

This state's going into the ****ter (as if it hasn't already), so if you can do your tenure here then leave, that would probably be the best option. Cost of living is ridiculous, it's way overpacked, etc.

Then again, you may really want to live here.

Either way, I hate this place so I'm a bit biased. Lived here my whole life though.

Im over Cali too.. Im from the Bay Area though

OC is nice, but damn you gotta be a damn 6 figures + to afford something in a NICE area.

Only thing keeping me here is the Warriors.

I need to move somewhere where its a lot cheaper but still hella chill.

Some states aren't as/won't be as devastated as CA.

lol dawg Matrix whats up with the doom and gloom

There are still opportunities here man, the weather is great most of the year

depending on location the people can either be very friendly or selfish.. but sounds like he's going to be near the more friendly area

He'll be fine. Cost of living is getting too expensive but its not like this is NY

Hey man, I am from Fairfield...Born and raised until I was 25. Kind of Ironic for this topic since I now live in Texas (Houston not San Antonio).

There's not much going on there. For a city of over 100,000 it really doesn't have much to offer by itself. Unfortunately, as house prices increased over the years, more and more people from the bay area (Richmond, etc.) have moved out that direction so crimes and what not have gotten worse over the years. It's not that bad, but not as nice as it was 10 -12 years ago.

The good thing is you are about an hour or less from San Francisco, Oakland, Sacramento and about 2 and a half hours from Reno/Tahoe, so while there isn't much going on in Fairfield, you not far from some decent stuff.

Apartments aren't cheap off base, but if you need help, I can point you in the direction of some of the nicer areas.

They are building a ton of new houses out towards the base.

Really all that Fairfield offers is the Solano Mall, which isn't much. All the newer restaurants are in Vacaville (next city over).

Let me know if you have any specific questions.

California is on the verge of bankruptcy. There are states that aren't; I know West Virginia was running a surplus (surprising in this day and age). However, 40 states and Washington D.C. are running a deficit (and of course the federal government). My home state of North Carolina is in the hole some three-million dollars and they recently raised the idea of a $0.25 per mile gas tax, which would be ridiculous. NC isn't in nearly as bad of shape as CA, though.

California is pretty nice, though. I've been to San Francisco before and it's pretty cool and I'd love to live up in the Sierra Nevadas somewhere.

The south. Avoid the parts of Florida that have been inundated with New Jersey garbage, and you're good to go.

I agree, the South, the real South not Florida, is a pretty chill place. Hell North Carolina is pretty relaxing I must say.

I wouldn't be mentioning Sacramento like it's something special. It's a cow town and not much else.

The area around Travis is pretty boring. San Francisco is about the best thing close to there, but you'll tire quickly.

The cost of the apartments shouldn't be too much of an issue as you're compensated well enough by the military to pay for it.

As far as Air Force Bases go I've seen much better locations.

I could be at Travis for 4 years and the only other base I could be at for permanant station is McGuire in New Jersey. I will get to go on alot of temporary duties around the world for my job but I won't start training for almost 5 months when I get to Travis.
