I never realized how terrible I would be at the opening message to someone.

I actually got pretty good at writing these emails, on match it is a bit more formal(pof first emails are usually "hey what's up"). I usually go three paragraphs: first paragraph is just pointing out stuff you like about their bio, second is relating to the girl through info from their bio, and the last one is just info about me(you can pretty much copy and paste this one).

Writing a first email is a lot like writing a cover page for a job you want, it's all about how well you can relate to them and making you sound as good as possible. I think I will have to ditch match.com for okcupid, I am in a bit of a holding pattern as I am still a bit creeped out by the last girl I met.

If I got to know you, I would invite you over for a romantic dinner and as soon as you arrived, I would pull you close and whisper in your ear "I have a swanson tv dinner in the freezer with your name on it" and then I would proceed to fill a wine glass with welch's grape juice

I did the online dating thing shortly after my first marriage ended.

First girl I dated was great and we dated for 4 months before my schedule got crazy with baseball and honestly I just forgot about her. I felt bad because she ended up being a rebound more or less and she was a good person. I actually ran into her 3 years later and he was still bitter.

Second girl was also very solid but lived about 90 miles away and I just could not deal with the distance. I liked the fact that I had the space but not that I was spending 3 hrs of my weekend driving. We dated for a few months before I broke it off. I did it by email, which looking back on it was pathetic way to do it.

Then I ran into crazy nympho girls, which was cool.

Girl 3 we went on 5 dates and went at it multiple times each time. She got bitter that I would just leave first thing in the morning. I just told her she wasn't serious relationship material.

Girl 4 was a knock out but we had a lot of fun on our first date. Tried to plan a 2nd but she had to work so I planned a meet up with Girl 3. Then Girl 4 quit her job and wanted to hang out, looking back on it I should have bailed on #3 and went with #4 but I did not. Girl 4 thought she was just a backup plan and we never saw each other again.

Girl 5 was very cool and attractive we had a lot of fun but both ended up in the friend zone after a few dates. Still friends today.

Girl 6 was a crazy hot nympho who taught me a ton but she was bat crazy and basically hinted that she was in love after a couple weeks. She had crazy ex drama too.

In between girl 4 and 5 I took a break from the online scene. And actually told myself I was done looking for my future wife. Low and behold the day after I made that decision I went to a party and met my now wife of 6 years.

We dated off an on for 7 months before we both finally said screw it we are going for it. Actually on my birthday I was out with friends and ready to score, she called me to tell me happy birthday and I was like damn it. That is when I realized she was the one.

In the end I think fondly of the online dating. I learned a lot and met some good people even though it did not lead to me meeting my wife.

For those familiar with OKCupid. When you add someone to your "favorites"(that sounds so creepy) is that the only time someone is able to IM you. I have noticed some of the girls I have sent messages to and not responded now have a little chat bubble next to their name that would allow me to IM them. Definitely a mixed signal if that's the case. They don't respond to a message, but add you to their favorites?

There's also the dozens of different tv dinner flavors in which you have no idea which one would be featured for you.

Her: You have me hooked now - I am thoroughly intrigued. This sounds infinitely better than the usual Taco Bell drive-thru dates that I am normally subjected to during which the gentleman I am accompanying pulls $12 out of his wallet and says "order whatever you want, babe...". We will have to make this happen at some point!
