Good plans...it definitely helps to have a goal/reason in mind. For me, it was that a lot of women don't like to date smokers. Oddly enough, my own health (while a good reason) wasn't good enough to focus on. Once I had a quality goal (I also was saving up for something electronic like TJ) it was easier.

Also, try and avoid your big triggers if possible. My biggest were smoking while driving and smoking while drinking. I avoided drinking, and just had to be vigilant when I was driving around.

I'm going on 2 years in a couple months, and it was the best thing I could have done. Now the smell of smoke grosses me out. Very rarely when I'm stressed I'll think "man, a smoke would be nice", but it's something I can very easily block...

It's awesome to feel healthier, and just not smell like *** anymore lol

      Re: Cigarettes

Judging from your username, use all your former cig money to buy herb... that's what I started to do, and that extra 8th every 2 weeks was nice to have. It didn't make me smoke more herb when all was said and done, it was just a good way of rewarding myself for not smoking cigarattes...

I didn't have much of a hard time quitting though, because I had already converted to hand-rolled smokes, which cut my consumption in half and made it hard to smoke while driving, etc., which made breaking habits easier (the hardest part of quitting smoking for most people). There's an idea for you... smoke handrolls and roll them individually each time so you can't just pull one out whenever you think about it.

I wouldn't call "herb" a safe and healthy alternative to smoking lol.

Just quit cold turkey. Don't pay for patches or self help books, at the end of the day, its still a mind thing.

I smoked for 10 years and quit gradually.

1st quit buying them and bum them, if you ask for enough, your friends would keep telling you no and make you feel bad.

            2nd, find something to do.

3rd, just stop and be a man about the whole thing. Understand that people that make cigs, make them addictive. Quit being a slave and take back control of your life.

I stopped like 4-5 years ago and never looked back.

              Re: Cigarettes

I was smoking 1.5 packs per day and sometimes to the point where my throat felt like it was ash and I was making myself sick. One day on the way to a job interview I saw I had one smoke left, I smoked it and decided that was the last one I was going to ever have and now, approx. 2 years later, I havent smoked once since then. Now I made it through it by chewing a **** ton of gum because I was more addicted to the act of smoking then the actual nicotine. Stay strong, avoid people who smoke and set weekly goals with rewards that will actually keep you going from week to week.

When considering the effects on your body, I would say it is a much more healthy alternative. That is for another topic.

                    Re: Cigarettes

I smoke about 8-10 Parliaments during cocktail hour (well, cocktail 3-4 hours) and for the last four years convienience stores constantly had "buy one get one" two pack special, which made them about $3.00 a pack...

I'd wait until the special and then stock up and store them in my freezer...

Now the specials have stopped, the manufacturer rasied the pack / carton price twice this year and as of April 1, 2009 the feds will add another $0.69 tax per pack...

In New York State (where I spend most of my time) they will now by close to $9.00 a a pack...

TRIPLE what I've spent for years...

Cartons, Buying them at the Native American tax reduced price dosen't lower it much...

All my friends are freaking out (lifetimers) and have multiple failed attempts between them which have included everything from Chantix to Hypnotisim, acupucture, cold turkey, the patch, etc...

I just loaded up in Florida (much lower tax) on Parliments ($40.00 per carton) and Pall Mall Lights (a 'steal' at $23.00 per carton)...enough to last a year if I can cut down a bit...

After that. I'll probably HAVE to quit, b/c I won't be able to justify the cost...

                    How will I quit?

The ONLY way it's ever worked for me is by buying Lucky Strike Non Flitered and when the craving hits, light up one of those bad boys...

They're so gross, I quit after about three packs...

                    Man, will I miss smoking when I'm drinking...but I can't justify the price anymore...ugh...

I am attempting to quit dipping and I recently found a product made by 1-800-Eat-Mint which is used by both dippers and smokers to quit smoking. Might want to call them. Basically it is ground up mint leaves that are either in pouches or just like regular chewing tobacco. They also have a study that shows that most people have trouble quitting because they have a oral fixation, as well as the addiction to nicotine. Once they kick the nicotine habit, they think their in the clear but go back to smoking because they have the oral fixation. Thats why you see many people who are quit trying to chewing on straws. Just a thought might want to try 1-800-Eat-Mint

Thats what my problem was, the oral fixation of smoking over anything else and I was constantly chewing gum and straws constantly but it worked in the end.

Thats great that you quit, congrats. But for those still trying I would suggest staying away from chewing straws they are horrible for your teeth.

One more advantage of the mint pouches I was discussing above is that they are basically like a breath mint that is long lasting.

I've been dipping for about four months. I don't really think I'm addicted but I buy two or three cans a week and dip probably four days a week. I know I need to quit.

                                Re: Cigarettes

It will be 2 years in April since I quit. It was as easy as deciding that I didn't want to do it anymore. People used to tell me all the time, stop smoking those cancer sticks and I'd reply, "Everybody has to go some time." One day i just decided that while the statement was true, I didn't need to increase my chances by smoking. Plus, I didn't want my kids to see me with a drug habit. It was getting out of the habit of doing that was the hardest, but basically you just have to make up your mind and just not do it. Mind over matter.

Word, except everytime i smoke herb, i love to get the post smoke cig in haha.
I used to be the same way. But now, if/when I do it, I just chill with that.

I wouldn't call "herb" a safe and healthy alternative to smoking lol.
