What is your definition of a "die-hard" fan?

I'm obviously talking about sports here and not the movie.

Mine is someone who will follow their team regardless of where they are at in the standings, actually be knowledgeable about their team and their history and also....this is a big one.....someone who will ONLY like that team and NOT another team in the same sport.

    What about you guys?

I'd agree...but I'd say you can follow other teams but your main one is your team.

I'll always be a Detroit sports guy, but I follow the local Phoenix teams because it's what I can see/hear about more. Doesn't mean I'm abandoning my team.

Also, when my team sucks hardcore I'll still glance at the standings or whatnot, but I don't watch every game when they suck. Take the Lions, I don't want to watch that crap...doesn't mean I'm not a die-hard fan.

I agree but with exceptions. You can only have one MAIN team. Then another that you like. Maybe you like the coach so your 2nd team is which ever he is coaching. I just think there are more reasons to be a fan.

Cant be a Cowboys and Redskins fan. Just no

You can be a Ravens/Redskins fan. Same area AND different conf (afc, nfc). You just have to pick your one from the start and always go for them to win. No switching based on the year.

You shouldnt be a Pakers/Skins fan. Both are in the Nfc so pick one.

As you can tell i am a skins fan. Just my .02
And come on now you know im a die-hard skins fan if i am putting up with Snyder.

Like others have said I will agree for the most part.

I will always be a Bronco fan and only a Bronco fan. But this year i will certainly be following the Bears and watching them if they aren't on when Denver is because I enjoy watching Cutler.

That said, I am not going to go out and buy a Bears jersey and start going to bars sayind "We will win the NFC North this year!"

          Exactly...that's my point.

I'm a die-hard Wings fan until I die, but since the Coyotes are here I wouldn't mind seeing them do well (except against the Wings!).

That's part of being a fan of the sport in general. I can usually find one team to root for in a random game I'm watching, but that'll never supplant MY team. For better or worse I'm a Detroit fan (mostly worse )

To me, I will live and die with my team, but I am not limited to just my team. I live in North Carolina but root for the Dolphins, but I would like to see the Panthers do well because of the impact it has on the city.

Also I root for certain players that I like even if they are not on my team.

But one team I can never ever ever root for are the Tar Holes, just can't do it.

                  Depends on the sport.

For pros, I think it's a single team in each sport for your entire life, aside from rare cases such as Baltimore football, Washington baseball, and Seattle basketball.

In college, I think it's a little more complicated. I think being a fan of XXXX basketball and YYYYY football excludes you from being a "diehard" fan. Obviously you'll care more about a sport that your school is good at, but saying "you know, my favorite school that I only picked because they were good at football isn't very good at basketball, so I think I'll just pick a good basketball program too" is pretty much the exact opposite of "die-hard" fan and the definition of bandwagoning. Obviously you change schools if you attend a different university. Choosing out-of-region powerhouses that you have no connection to is bandwagoning plain and simple.

When you actually as ticked off when your team loses with no money on the game as you would if you just lost $1000.

Had an intresting bit on this at the end of the year...

I watch some NFL at my boys house so by proxy I'm around his friends more and more. A decent lot by far, but not my crew.

One of them has been a Tampa Bay fan for what he said is a while but then when his team was losing one weekend said he was done with them and was now a Patriots fan. We as a group harassed the living hell out of him and declared what we believe is a new rule...

If you quit on "your" team you can only exchange for the worst team by record that year. Our next lowest if your team bottoms out.

Now I'm never quitting on my Bears but this seemed equitable for a fickle fan.

                          Any thoughts?

I agree with the OP except for the other team thing. Like I would never cheer for another team in the same division or whatnot if my team is still in it but if the story is good enough and there's enough interesting players or guys who have connections with my team i'll cheer for them in the playoffs.

Someone mentioned feeling it when their team wins or losses, well i've gotten physically sick over Bills losses so sometimes I wonder if it's good for my health to be such a die hard fan! LOL
