Propane, charcoal or mesquite wood ? What makes you a true griller ?

Ok this debate has been going on for over a decade. What makes you a true bbq griller ? BBQ die hards from different regions have their own opinion.

People from the midwest say charcoal is true grillin. You got your west coast people and northeast people who like propane. Then you got those texans who say mesquite wood cooking is the way to go.

Me personally, being born and raised in Chicago, if you not doing it over charcoal, you not true grillin. Got to get smoke up in your clothes and hair ya know. Wear as people can smell that charcoal grillin blocks away.

So what is your opinon ?

Well I live in Maine. I think Charcoal is the only way to go...But if your in a hurry for some reason and need a quick bbq, then propane.. But for the most part I use Charcoal. Probably 90% Charcoal and 10% Propane for me... I always try to make time when I grill... I have a charcoal starting cylinder with handle..Put Charcoal in top and lighting stick in the bottom. Works really well. I don't use that starter fluid..

            Propane and propane accessories...

I would love to use charcoal but I don't have the patience. Setting up true, multi-layered zones, getting an even cooking surface, etc. just takes too much time. I like the convenience of a gas grill.

While I've never claimed to be a grill god, it is something I do on a weekly basis year round and greatly enjoy. Nothing beats a hunk of cow on the fire, cooked to a nice medium rare, a cold beer, and good company.

              Charcoal w/ pecan wood chunks.

You can tell the difference between propane, it's just not as good.

                  Agree.

Although when i worked at Roadhouse i found out that wood and charcoal made a better tasting steak. But propane is just so much easier

I like using gas. Charcoal doesn't taste good to me. Never tried the wood chips though.

Wood chips taste good, however the only thing about it is that not all wood chips work with all types of meat in my opinion.

Because other then mesquite, you have apple, cherry wood and some others. So you really got to know what you are doing and it is a trial and error thing to determine what wood flavor taste good with what type of meat.

Propane adds no flavor to the food like charcoal or wood do. Gas grills are ok if you want it fast. Use wood or charcoal if you want it good.
