Cop Arrests Journalist
I don't know if any of you guys have seen this, but it's news here in El Paso and know it's making national headlines. Below the video is the link to the story on what happened.

Re: Cop Arrests Journalist
Seems to me like the Sergeant was having a bad day, and made a bad decision.
Either way the cameraman followed rule 101 and kept rolling the entire time, even when the cop slammed his nice camera to the ground and placed him into custody even when he was walking to his truck to leave.
I've been in these situations before. Usually both parties can come to an agreement to leave or ease up on the "Bad Cop Attitude."
Sometimes though in extreme circumstances when you're rights are being completely violated you feel that you have to push it to the level that it reached here.Comment

Re: Cop Arrests Journalist
I see fault on both sides. When a cop ask you to leave, just leave without giving lip about "he can shoot if he wants too" and crap like that. I do think the cop was probably in an ill mood and went a little overboard though.Last edited by bsb13; 04-22-2009, 05:44 AM.Comment

Re: Cop Arrests Journalist
So hard to get the full story from the vid/news but looks like the TV guy was not helping the traffic back up. Cop said move.
And somewhere in journalism school this guy got the right to free speech confused with the right to do anything I want to.
After that, everybody gets trapped playing their roles out to the fullest.Comment

Re: Cop Arrests Journalist
I agree both sides are at fault. Reporter shouldn't be interferring while an investigation is going on. Wait your turn. Then he mouthed off to the officer.
Cop looked like he had a bad day & his temper was on a hair trigger. I don't think he was wrong to arrest the reporter. The article says the Sgt's superior says he should have arrested all bystanders @ the scene if he was going to arrest one guy. But it looks like the bystanders were just watching. It was only the reporter who was getting in the way, talking to people involved.
I'd place most blame on the reporter. But the officer should have more control of his temper. I don't want people w/guns to not have control of their emotions.Originally posted by VP Richard M. Thanks, dookies!Comment

Re: Cop Arrests Journalist
Seems there was another complaint filed against the Sergeant that scene:
In a candid interview, El Paso Police Department Chief Greg Allen said that video of a police sergeant detaining an ABC-7 news crew is enough to prove that the sergeant behaved inappropriately. Allen described the images as "disturbing.Comment

Re: Cop Arrests Journalist
I agree that in about 99.9% of situations like this as a journalist it's best to just listen to what the police say. Most of the time if you just move half a block down the street and shoot video from there no one will give you any more problems.
