I have two and they were the stupidest decisions I ever made. I got my first one, a tribal design on my right upper arm, my freshman year in college. A bunch of people on my floor all decided to get a tattoo (not the same design).
I got the second one, an eagle carrying the U.S. flag on my upper left arm, a year later...pretty much on impulse.
Regardless of how I got them, I look at them as a tremendous waste of money and frankly, while I thought they looked cool when I got them, they just look tacky today...and my arms aren't in bad shape [yet]. The only positive story is that when I went back to class shortly after my second one, I saw my now wife for the second time. Right now, I'm against getting tattoos for myself.
If you think about it, if you get a tattoo done you want people to see it. So you'd put it somewhere where it's always visible, right? But then later when you're all wrinkly and old, it looks stupid. Or at least you do because now you're not as jacked as you were 30 years ago and that tribal band around your (now shrunken) biceps is pretty comical.
Tattoos pretty much embody that whole live now, forget tomorrow philosophy. Which I'm not too big a fan of...
Seriously, the only thing I've considered getting a tattoo of is my favorite sports team(s). That's one thing I know I'm going to love for the rest of my life. And I don't even want to do that right now.
I do see the flipside of honoring someone, though. That is something that I wouldn't do because there's other ways to remember someone, but I can definitely see the point.

Got a tatoo of an Arkansas Razorback on my ankle ( wanted to put it somewhere where I could easily hide it if I needed to) Got it after they won the national championship in basketball in '94. Before the tourney I told some friends that if they won I would do it and it happened so I felt like I had to go through with it. Now I forget it's even threre.My Teams

My tattoos I'm planning on getting are pretty personal.
The first one is on my chest, of three (fairly small) scattered birds flying over my heart. They start off small and gradually get bigger. The first one represents the child me and my girlfriend lost in October when she miscarried. The second is her, and the third is me.
Then on the inside of my left wrist (so I can cover with a watch) I'm getting the word FLY.
I know what you're thinking, and even if me and the lady happen to go seperate ways, the tattoo will still mean a lot to me.. It's not like I'm getting her name and a heart or something.Comment
