There's nothing better than a well made Reuben. However, I'd argue that using turkey would make it less of a Reuben than using cole slaw. Cole slaw and kraut are both cabbage based while turkey comes from an entirely different animal than corned beef.

How about the size of this Reuben?

Somewhere under the cheese there might be meat.Comment

Re: Favorite Sandwich Thread
Oh god, there's the most un****witable sandwich in the world in Downtown Denver at Osteria Marco. It's just Ciccioli (the BEST Italian-style pulled pork... just insanely good, I would eat it by the pound if I could and would die of a terrible heart attack by 28), proscuitto, and provolone. Basically, it's the most awesome pork product mish-mash ever, with melted cheese and great homemade panini bread, served with an arugula salad simply dressed with olive oil, lemon juice, and black pepper. They also have a ridiculous lamb panini with olive tapenade and goat cheese...
At home, my "best" sandwich is probably the Italian chicken salad I make whenever I buy a rotisserie chicken or roast my own. I pull the chicken off and mix it with a bit of mayonaise blended with olive oil and coarse-ground mustard until it holds decently together. Then I add finely sliced red onions, diced marinated artichoke hearts, capers, a dash of white wine vinegar, some lemon juice, dried basil and oregano, fresh Italian parsley, and kosher salt/pepper. I normally serve it on pan-toasted Ciabatta or something like that with either chevre goat cheese or a white farmer's cheese, but it's damn good just on some wheat bread too.
EDIT: Also, I'll NEVER understand those gigantic NY deli sandwiches... they look god awful to actually eat. The whole point of a sandwich is to make things easy to eat and not be all sloppy -- sandwich architecture is very important to me ha... can't have tomatoes touching mayo because they slide everywhere, can't have lettuce touching dry bread (mayo and fatty spreads buffer the bread from moisture and keep it crispy), etc. A gigantic sandwich like the one posted above totally disregards those things... if I wanted to eat 75 slices of pastrami and 2 pieces of white bread, I'd go buy a pound of meat and go to work with a fork.

Re: Favorite Sandwich Thread
Yeah, I can't front on PBJ... that's definitely my most common sandwich, even at 24. Can't get enough. That and grilled cheeses are my standby "don't feel like cooking" sandwiches for sure.
My favorite PBJ is always a mix of crunchy and creamy with raspberry preserves on something fluffy like potato bread... perfect.Send your Midnight Release weirdo pics/videos to my new website: http://www.peopleofmidnightreleases.com!Comment

The thing though with that place from where I posted those pictures from, they have a Pickle Bar with Rye (Seeded/Unseeded), and Pumpernickel.Oh god, there's the most un****witable sandwich in the world in Downtown Denver at Osteria Marco. Re: Favorite Sandwich Thread
I'll agree with that. My mom wouldn't use the canned corn beef I got though, so I had to go with the turkey.
However, I don't think it's the cabbage or corned beef that defines the Rueben... It's that sweet taste of the kraut.Last edited by bgeno; 06-08-2009, 12:43 PM.Originally posted by DaImmaculateONeHow many brothers does Sub-zero running around in his clothing? Re: Favorite Sandwich Thread
Haha, so you literally make several sandwiches with all the meat they give you? That's hilarious... and it also backs up my point about how crazy those sandwiches are... give me a well-constructed simple sandwich over those behemoths any day. Most of them are literally just meat and bread anyway... don't understand the fascination.
At the deli I used to work at, we had a triple-decker PB sandwich that had marshmallow fluff and bananas in it... totally ridiculous and messy... it was like a giant dessert. They also had a triple-decker grilled cheese with smoked gouda, smoked cheddar, provolone, and bleu cheese on semolina bread.. good stuff, if a bit unweildy to eat.Send your Midnight Release weirdo pics/videos to my new website: http://www.peopleofmidnightreleases.com!Comment

Re: Favorite Sandwich Thread
That meat is so amazing though, and the place is targeted for groups of people, the small sammichs which is I think 12oz of meat is supposed to be 1-2 people, and the bigger one 24oz is for 3-4, then they got triple deckers which is 4-6 people.Haha, so you literally make several sandwiches with all the meat they give you? Re: Favorite Sandwich Thread
Heh, yeah, to each his own I guess. I can appreciate the virtues of just chowing down on some good deli meats (especially pork-related ones)... I guess I'd rather have a salumi plate if I'm going to do that though. I don't think that I'd normally be able to sit down and essentially eat a pound and a half of pastrami and two slices of bread, even if it was shared with another person and there were pickles to be had.
...Now a massive pile of pulled pork, some good vinegary (or Carolina style mustard) BBQ sauce, and a bag of wonder bread is another story hah... I'll be back to Earth in about 3 hours.Send your Midnight Release weirdo pics/videos to my new website: http://www.peopleofmidnightreleases.com!Comment

Re: Favorite Sandwich Thread
Well all sammichs come with the pickle bar, which has about 5 types, it also has sour tomatoes, health salad(Claremont Salad), onion bread. You also get your choice of fries, onion rings, potato pancake, or knish.Heh, yeah, to each his own I guess. The potato pancakes, the size of a pizza...

But they also got chicken salad, and other deli staple.
They got this one sammich though, thinly sliced roast beef, melted cheddar, bacon, and onions with au jus gravy. It's so freaking good.Comment

Re: Favorite Sandwich Thread
Christmas Day I go outside and Grill a 7 or 8 pound prime rib for our family dinner. I intentially make more than is necessary just so I have some left over for the Sandwich's.
I put a nice slab of Roast Beef on a bagget with fresh bleu cheese crumbles. Awesome stuff.
Also like Grilled Asparagus on pumpernickel with Gouda Cheese and Roasted Red Pepper.
Good stuff.Chalepa Ta Kala.....Comment
