Has anyone else had trouble transitioning from playing sitting down to playing standing up? I've been a bedroom guitarist for about 7 years now and when I play standing up I just feel like everything is just way sloppier and my vibrato isn't nearly as refined as when I'm sitting down. I'm sure I just need to practice standing up more, but any tips?

1) Form / join band
2) Book show
3) Rehearse for said show 3x harder and longer than you think you need to
4) Play show
5) Repeat steps 2-5 repeatedly
There's nothing like interaction with band members (esp. if they're more experienced than you) and the possibility of public humiliation to motivate you to levels you never expected, faster than you thought possible...

It's fun!

Re: The OS Guitarists thread
I have this problem also. My wife bought me 1 of them A-frame on stage chairs for Christmas a couple years ago and thats the only chair I use. When I play standing up its like the muscle memory is a bit off. Not so bad for chords but any sort of scale practice or solos.

Re: The OS Guitarists thread
I will be learning to play the guitar and I am getting ready to purchase my first guitar. I'm going to be selecting between the Fender FA 100 or the Yamaha FG 700S. Does anyone have experience with either of these guitars? If so, which one would you recommend?PSN: FiSH_M3ATComment

Re: The OS Guitarists thread
I'm biased towards Fender but Yamaha has quality products as well.
Are you able to play them first? Go with whichever feels and sounds the best to you. If you don't like the way it plays or hate its voice you won't want to play.GO 'HAWKS!

Re: The OS Guitarists thread
Here is my soundcloud page if anyone is interested. I have 5 songs up right now, which are demos that I have been working on since early 2013, along with one cover song, and one drunken collab with a friend of mine. Everything on there (besides the collab track) is done by me. No vocals, mostly just piano, guitar, drum tracks, and noise.
These were recorded using a Boss Micro BR. It is very handy for on the fly recording, but lacks in the sound quality. It isn't terrible, but no match to studio quality of course. I live in an apartment, so I have to record with headphones on. I only have one guitar, which is a Paul Reed Smith 20th anniversary custom 22. My keyboard is a yamaha psr-e423. I am an awful piano player, and quite sloppy on guitar as well, but I really enjoy writing and recording. Never took lessons, which I only halfway regret.Last edited by Exogenesis33; 12-29-2013, 02:34 PM.Comment

Re: The OS Guitarists thread
For those that taught themselves what sources did you guys use once you got the basics down? I'd like to dive deeper into scales, riffs/licks, and progressions, but would like to do it in a way that teaches me the mechanics/theory so I can transpose and create things myself.

Re: The OS Guitarists thread
What do you guys suggest to do to improve my speed? I can't play most things up until the solo and then it all goes to crap because I can't play as fast as I want to. My fingers just don't want to move with speed!
I taught myself how to play about 15 years ago and have been playing intermittently since then. It's not like I practice everyday but I feel like I play enough where I should have atleast some speed.
For example, I can play lead of Sweet Child of Mine up until the last solo with where the wah pedal kicks in. Then I have to switch to rhythm and do that to finish the song. It just gets frustrating since I do that to pretty much every song I know. Any tips on what to do?Comment

Re: The OS Guitarists thread
Break down the solo into manageable sections. Practice each section separately gradually increasing speed as you learn the movement and muscles remember the forms. Then put it altogether.

Re: The OS Guitarists thread
It sucks, I feel like I've hit a wall in my playing and it just isn't very enjoyable for me anymore. A break from playing might be what I need, but I don't have that drive or motivation to play anymore. I know I'm a good guitar player, but I've realized that I'll always be a drummer and I enjoy playing drums significantly more, especially live.1905 1921 1922 1933 1954 2010 2012

Re: The OS Guitarists thread
I like rotating between things. Last night I learned Up to Me by Jethro Tull, but before that I hadn't played in at least a week. I'll go through periods where all I play is the acoustic and then jump to the electric.
I really want to actually educate myself this Summer on music theory and song structure.
