I'm planning to go on a trip for about a week at the end of the month. I just want to get away and chill so I thought Hawaii would be good.

Hawaii, someone drop knowledge
I've been to Oahu like three times.. but can someone share experiences of the other islands?

Re: Hawaii, someone drop knowledge
What do you want to know, i lived there for 3 and a half years.
I lived and worked on Oahu. I Also worked on the big Island, I dont care for that place at all. Personally If I were to go back to Hawaii for Vacation I would go to Kauai, that place is Beautiful. Maui Is too commercialized, Lanai and Molokai aren't really for visitors, and Kauai is pretty expensive.
If money was no issue for me I would go to Kauai. If I had to worry about money I would go to Oahu and just hang out up on the north shore. if you stay in the middle of the Island that is cheaper than the ocean too...Last edited by Cusefan; 07-05-2009, 02:50 PM.My dog's butt smells like cookiesComment

Maui is a good place to relax. I haven't gone in years, but I always loved it there.
Maui's the only island I've been to, so I don't know much else about the other islands.Blind to this impending fate

Re: Hawaii, someone drop knowledge
I spent all but one day of my vacation in Hawaii in Oahu, but I did spend one day on the Big Island. I would definitely recommend seeing Kieauea there. That was pretty interesting to watch the lava creep slowly down across the plain. In fact, a larger eruption occurred just a few weeks after we left, which left the road that we got to the volcano with covered in a thick, black lava.
Though I didn't get to go, I'd recommend going to the top of Mauna Loa and/or Mauna Kea. I'm not sure if there would be any snow up there this time of year, but in the winter there is often snow up there and you can even ski the slopes. That would be pretty exciting.Comment

Re: Hawaii, someone drop knowledge
Damn, I was thinking about that.. Oahu is cool since it's the known tourist spot but I definitely want to visit another island this time around.
Well I'm going to be alone and I just want to get away basically and relax. I don't mind if I go somewhere where there's a lot of people or if I go to an island that's simply "scenic" with minimal people.
I need to figure out if I'm going to need a car on certain islands? I wouldn't mind going somewhere where you can just walk to the beach and the local town with bars etc. so I wouldn't have to pay for a car rental.
So you give the Big Island a thumbs down.. reasons?
Kauai sounds cool from what I've read on the tourism site.
Edit: I just saw your edits, thanks man.. sounds pretty simple to me.Comment

Central and Northern Oahu are pretty chill too since the tourists dont really venture up that way. Most Tourists just stay in Waikiki and don't venture out. The North Shore of Oahu is pretty awesome imo, and you will be right by the Dole plantation and you can get roadside Pineapple!!!My dog's butt smells like cookiesComment

Awesome. I can't wait to get out there..
If I go to Oahu I will definitely just hang out outside of Waikiki for the most part.
I'll check into the pricing for KauaiComment

Re: Hawaii, someone drop knowledge
I went down there in 2008 for the hawaii bowl and the locals I met were great. We ended up hanging out with some totally random people after the game, even going to a little party at their house.
It was cool to get away from all the tourist stuff and meet some cool people. Plus, I didn't even get robbed or raped.Last edited by bkfount; 07-05-2009, 06:38 PM.Comment

I'd say go to the Big Island and stay in Kona. Don't worry if a few people refer to you as a "Haole."I've heard this "patience is a virtue" junk all my life. I'm happy to say I have no virtue, no scruples, and no desire to wait too long for anything. In my humble opinion instant gratification takes too long!

Re: Hawaii, someone drop knowledge
You and me both. I was out there for 4 years, in the military. Lived in Waipahu and my neighbors were awesome. We had massive cookouts, were skins fans, tailgated at UH games together and they even caught and beat the **** out of the guy that tried to steal my car while I was in Japan for two weeks.
I was at a poker game that was robbed at gun point which was the worst thing that happened to me.Moderator
