never had either because they are not here in Rhode Island. I do go to Fatburger the 2 times I went to Cali'(89 and 91) and thought the double-king-chili-chese was good there.

For my NJ/NY Folks: What's up with White Castle? Is it worth the hype it gets or do people just overrate it too much?

Overrated. Their burgers are always soggy whenever I eat there. Every so often (once a year) I'll see one and stop to get some burgers and then immediately wonder what I was thinking.

As for the question never had In-N-Out, but 5 Guys is great. The one by me even has Mello Yello in the fountain drinks. Haven't seen that drink anywhere else for a while.

I've been to both...

In-N-Out wins the burger, hands down.

Five Guys wins the fries.

In-N-Out wins overall for service and quality. The Five Guys I've been to have been very inconsistent and no better staffed than your local McDonalds. In-N-Out was always a notch better (they pay their employees good wages and benefits)

That benefits is what give them good service. I have a friend that is a manager and they get pay very well. So I lot of people apply for those jobs. They can get the creme of the crop.

I'm an east coaster and southern boy, so I don't know anything about In-N-Out, but some of the stuff said about Five Guys is LoL bad.

Maybe the non-DMV franchises are terrible, but some of the stuff here is just WTF and others make me think that In-N-Out has to suck if it is comparable or worse than Five Guys in some qualities.

You might want to try it some day it is pretty good. They don't consider themselves fast food. So the food is prepare fresh every day. I like it and it is always busy. It is like a freaking gold mine.

Yep they are good. I used to get the Whiskey burger. I still like Nations the best. Great every thing there.

I was in Oakland once and went into a Nations, man that was great burger. Although I live on the east coast, I still remember that place. Being from OK, I still like to get a What-a-burger when I'm at home or visiting peeps in TX.

In the summers as a kid I used to spend alot of time in Pasadena with my dad (he drove a truck for company out of there and he took me when I was out of school) so we went to the original In and Out in Baldwin Park alot. I still think it's the best burger around.

The one nearest me has Pibb Xtra, always a rarity for me.

After reading this thread it prompted me to try 5 Guys. Living in Massachusetts, I can't try In-N-Out so I can't weigh in there. I went to 5 Guys last night and got the bacon cheeseburger with regular fries and a regular drink. For those of you curious, it cost $11.

I liked that you can dress your burger how want it. I went conventional and just got pickles, mustard, ketchup, lettuce, and onions. I felt the burger was good, but not amazing. The bacon was of a better quality than fast food places but the beef was just a tiny step up over Wendy's. If given the choice between Wendy's and 5 Guys based on taste, I'd take 5 Guys but factoring in cost I'd probably have to go Wendy's. That's just talking burgers, the fries obviously blow Wendy's away. As far as the big 3 of the fast food burger joints go, I probably prefer McDonald's but I wouldn't go there if I wanted a real burger. They're burgers are like candy. Wendy's has the best burgers, though I think they're fries are awful. 5 Guys has damn good fries, though I wish they offerred a cheaper small size as I'm not interested in eating that many french fries. I ate them plain, no ketchup or anything, and enjoyed them.

My final verdict was that the place was pretty good, but for 11 bucks I can get a better burger at a sit-down restaurant. If I'm ever in CA I'll give In-N-Out a try but they if manage to be reasonably tasty and half the cost they would win for me.

To the person who asked about White Castle, it's good but I wouldn't drive 45 minutes for it. People say it gives them the poops, but I never experienced that from eating the Castle.

The chicken rings and crinkle cut fries are amazing though.

Went to Five Guys a week ago. Very good. But when I went to In-N-Out when I was out in Cali, that was probably the best fast food I've ever had. Their burgers were top-quality and tasted fresh.

Also an East Coaster though so I can't say for the InO. I think with the service and atmosphere hit's and misses.. it probably just depends on the day you go. I don't go to Five Guys often, but everytime I do go the employees remember who I am and I get great service! And those great fries are just an added plus. I don't think it's too pricey considering what your getting for the money. If I wanted a cheap burger I'd go to a cheap burger spot. But when I want the best I go to the best and I don't mind paying a little extra to get it.
