Re: Ideas About Great Places To Live

    I would think Atlanta.

It's racially diverse. It is probably "fun" considering it's a big city. As with anywhere, the crime rate depends on where you live, but I think you could find a good place to live for an affordable price.

Let me expand on this a bit. The crime rate is NOT that high. In fact, crime has gone down considerably. We're talking the violent crime which would do damage to you or kill you. Most of the violent crime is isolated in pockets of the city with a criminal/gang history. Although, some historically bad places have cleaned up considerably in the last few years.

I'd also recommend living in the 905 area code, not as much crime there AND a lot more affordable to live in. The 416 area is pretty damn expensive to live in especially the closer you get to the downtown core.

That being said, Toronto and the surrounding areas is one of the best places to live IMO.

Move to Vegas. It's an absolute hell hole out here!

I'm T-Minus a month or so from moving to Portland. I can hardly wait to leave...

          Keep it coming fellas.

I'm really taking a lot of what you guys are saying into consideration.

And what do you guys think about areas in Cali? I have some family out there, so it'd be nice to hear some of your thoughts about out there.

If you were considering the Cincinnati area...I probably wouldn't.

            - Racial diversity - Lots of it but there are a lot of problems with it too.
            - A fun area, with lots to do or fun things nearby - Many people might find Cincy boring, which it can be, but there is a lot to do. Plus, keep in mind too...you can hit up Chicago, Nashville, Cleveland, Canada, as well as Indianapolis, Columbus, and Louisville, all within a 5-hour drive. And, you really aren't all that far from the east coast.
            - Low crime rates - They're low but it's ridiculous in the city. Been a problem since '01.
            - Affordable (we're young) - Very affordable.

Honestly, just in my experience from visiting the place, I think Columbus, OH, fits a lot of what you're looking for. Don't know anything about the crime level though. Also, two places I wouldn't mind moving to that I've visited are Indianapolis and Nashville.

You seriously need to consider Columbus Ohio. Diverse, growing, safe, affordable and you have 4/5 major league cities right nearby.

Columbus is a college town on steroids.

I've actually found some places that were comparable to here in Jacksonville.

CNN has a cost of living calculator that can compare your cost of living in one city to another (not sure of it's accuracy. But it seems to be on point). There are some areas that are affordable.

Sacramento's cost of living is actually lower than the national average.

Something I found kind of funny is that houses in Compton cost a grip (may be due to there being some really expensive areas in Compton. Who knew?). Yet people are still able to afford living there. I think I can do a little better than what some of the residents in Compton are doing. So that gave me reason to believe that living in Cali isn't as bad as people make it seem.

And no....I'm not trying to live in Compton...Lol

                            No you haven't.

Even if you find a place where the costs are comparable (doubtful), they'll likely be in either high crime areas or in places where there's nothing to do.

Oh and you'll have 6-10% state income tax (as opposed to your 0% right now), so a place would need to be significantly cheaper for it to be comparable.

I live in Fresno (smack dab central cali) and it's not bad. We're about 2 1/2 to 4 hrs from anything. San francisco, 3 national parks, (yosemite one of them) skiing, beaches, pro teams, you name it I can get there in about 3 hours. We think it's pretty affordable. I have a three bedroom house in a nice area that are going for about 150,000 now. Wasn't the case a few years ago though...

But we like it here. I just got back from monterey yesterday stayed one night and the drive only took me 2.5 hours. I would have been less but I hit a patch of traffic on the 101.
Went to the beach threw back some brews at a local pub, good times.

The summers are hot +100's but this year we've been pretty mild
right now we're sittin at about 96. But like every says "It's a dry heat" LOL.

The fog in the winter can be down right scary but once you learn to drive in it it's all good.

                              Hope that helps!!
