Golf tips for an absolute beginner?

I'm heading out in a little less than an hour for my first round.

I'm 21, and I've never golfed before. I've been to the driving range, but I'm usually pretty terrible. Except I was decent last time... I was actually hitting it respectable about 3 weeks ago.

I've been looking at some videos online to get the very basics... ball placement, backswing, momentum. I realize that I'm going to be absolutely horrible... that's a given. It seems like every normal guy is terrible at golf... lol

I'm going with a buddy to hit up the driving range first, then we're going to a nice public course very near home... it ranks pretty high in Pennsylvania among public courses.

    Any quick tips? Thanks!

Tempo is key. You don't have to swing hard to hit the ball far. Just need to make good contact.

Old men play this sport, you DO NOT need to swing your hardest. Make sure you take good controlled swings. Take a few practice swings. Take your time.

Make sure you enjoy yourself. Dont stress if your not doing well, it will only make it worse. Most of the game is mental so keep your composure. But again enjoy the peaceful escape and dont even count your score.

Question: When your at the range, did you always use the drivers or the 9 iron? Imo its easier to learn the swing with the lower clubs then work up to the driver.

Eye contact is the most important thing. It's like baseball...All you have to do is focus and make contact. If you try to hit the ball too hard most likely you will make grass fly or the ball will go a shorter distance.

Confidence...If you think you are going to suck...You are going to suck. Put it in your mind if he can do it...I can do it.

            Play smooth, confident, and focus.

Now that you mention it, I usually did struggle with drivers and woods as opposed to irons.

When I was there three weeks ago, I nabbed a 6-iron from the clubs they had there for use. It was a real nice club that actually wasn't supposed to available as it was for sale, but I didn't realize until I was done. No harm, no foul.

If you have the extra money i would recommend getting lessons my wife me bought lessons a few years ago. Something like 3 lessons for $50 and they where an hour a piece. They were defintely worth it.

Head down, eyes on the ball, easy swing.

Start your swing with the shoulder turn first. Everything else will fall into place.

What he said. Just Concentrate on hitting the ball straight and the distance will follow. Just dont try to crush the ball and hit it a mile, it will either go about 15 feet or it will go about 3 fairways over.

                      This

and KEEP YOUR HEAD DOWN. If you just focus on keeping your knees bent and your head completely still you will be fine.

Also, make sure you get rotation on your wrist.

I do a drill holding the club with only my right hand.

Without a ball, set yourself up like there is a ball there.

With only your right arm, start your back swing.

Rotate your wrist/arm so the palm of your hand would be facing up, do this as you are swinging back.

Come back down and rotate it back to the normal position and swing through.

As you swing through, your wrist/arm should be rotating so the palm would be down.

The goal is to have the club face go from an open position(point away from your) as you go back, and as your swing back through forward, it's rotating back around and it closes just as it hits the ball preventing a slice.

If your club is like */ when you hit the ball, you will slice it. When it's like *| it will go perfectly straight. And having it closed to much, *\ it better than having it open. The * is the ball if you didn't catch that

                          Best advice thus far.

It was your first time. I Just hope you had fun.

I am not familiar with the course you played, but there is a course near the airport called Blackhawk with 36 holes that is relatively cheap and is wide open. It would be a nice course for a beginner.

Yeah go ahead...And drive the cart. Kills millions a year. Countless times at the Oakway course...Drunks think it's cool to drive. Know what happens? They run right into the golfball washers and die.
Why dont you hand the guy a gun.

                              What?

No one said drink a case and drive home. Just have a few beers out on the course and have some fun.

                              Take it easy.
