Technically it could. Even 1 dip could give you cancer.

? Since when can you "catch" cancer?

Re: Those Who Have Quit Dipping Snuff

I used to dip quite a bit senior year of HS and throughout most of college. One day I just decided it was time to stop. I slowly weened myself off by chewing a lot of gum and sunflower seeds. I still will do it off and on, especially during our baseball season but it's not nearly as bad as it once was. I maybe go through a can a month during the season and during the offseason, a can can last me 3 months.

You can't catch cancer, but one dip is enough to cause the cells in those areas to change. It's not something that has to be repeated over and over again - although repeated occurrences will increase the likelihood of cancer. Don't forget, people can get throat/lip/mouth cancer without ever dipping or smoking a cigarette.

Oddly enough, I once discussed this with a Dr. on a golf course before I quit dipping (I was with a buddy and we got paired with him and another guy...my buddy and I were dipping at the time). Anyhow, he stated that we all have cancerous cells dormant in our body. Those cells can remain dormant forever or they can become active. Obviously smoking/dipping will increase the likelihood of those cells becoming active. Smoking/dipping can also cause normal cells to be transformed into cancerous cells.

Genetics are also part of it....so is overall health/fitness and 100's of other factors.

Interesting. I know you can get lung/mouth/etc cancer without ever using tobacco products so I guess I assumed if you got mouth cancer after dipping once or twice it was bound to happen anyway. Same goes for something one cigarette then? I'm sure the odds are insanely small but it's still interesting.

thanks for all of the responses guys. They certainly gave me a reality check!

I havent dipped for the last couple of days, and I dont plan on it. If I dont quit than im an idiot and am just asking for problems. Ive always been one of those "it wont happen to me" people, but it definitely can happen to me.

For those that have never partaken in this nasty habit, dont start. For those that have, just quit. You will be so much better off. There are too many potential health risks, and it's obviously not worth it.

I've seen enough pictures of mouth cancer to keep me from dipping that stuff. Those pictures do not look like something I would be interested in risking.

Why does somebody always pop in and say that? I think tabacco users are already aware of the risks.

Ehhh, i've gone off and on for about the past year... I was on probation so I couldn't drink for a little while so I would throw a dip in on my home from work to chill out. The first time I put a sizable dip in I was all wobbly kneed and stuff, I was glad I was just chilling playing 360 if I had been driving it could have been worse then DUI just from dip.... Probably been a month since I dipped last, just easy for me to put down or pick up, actually way easier to put down then pick back up, I usually puke from the taste at least once a can.

Have at it. I don't care what people use, I was just saying that I'm personally not a dipper because I'm scared of oral cancer.

Re: Those Who Have Quit Dipping Snuff

hey man I just recently quit, I dipped from HS until I was 18, then I started smoking. Last year I quit smoking by going back to dipping.

One day my gums were hurting so I went in brushed my teeth and I looked where it was hurting and at the bottom of 1 tooth my gums had receded down so I had like a long tooth. I flipped out like holy crap. I took all the cans I had threw them out, went out and picked up committ lozenges and never looked back.

Im now down to like 2-3 lozenges over evry 2 days. Once i am done with the pack i have im off that program. I dont nic really for anything now.

The weird thing is, the second I quit dipping, my body went back to craving ciggarettes. The only thing is that it was like 8 months since I quit smoking so I didnt have to break the "habits of smoking" which was the reason i was never able to quit in the first place so it was much easier.

                          Just stop.

I have had a few bad habits in my day and there is no magical way. You just have to have will power.
