Re: Anyone major in history?
A friend of mine was a history major, and she now works in the Pensacola Chamber of Commerce. Not sure exactly what she does there, but before getting that job, she was a massage therapist for 6 or 7 years.
I've also heard that a lot of statisticians are history majors.
Here's a small list of jobs you can use a history major for:

Re: Anyone major in history?
I received a BA degree in history from Duquesne University in 2001 (with a dual major in classical civilization and cum laude if it matters). My jobs in the first few years out of school: waiter, delivery guy, beer delivery guy, warehouse worker, and probably a few more winners I'm forgetting. Some (most?) of that has more to do with me and a lack of direction.
Eventually I did work in as a teacher (for adjudicated youth), moved on to admissions for a trade school, and now work as a student advisor in adult education. I haven't completed a master's program yet, as I don't know what to do -- I started one for sec ed but quickly decided it wasn't for me.
My advice is if you're looking to work in a field directly related to history (museum/archival, teaching, etc) -- get your master's degree. You'll have a better options and will make more money. <------ cum laude my ***!

Re: Anyone major in history?
Thanks for the link and info.
Right now I'm a double major in history and secondary education, with only three classes from having my history part finished while I have five or six more education classes. I'm sure I'll finish the education part too, but I was would prefer something more like the archival work or research and preservation.
I want a Master's too, but at this point I'm so tired of school.Comment

Re: Anyone major in history?
I am graduating with a degree in social science education. Which is basically a teachers degree focusing on history. I did it so I could teach and coach football/basketball at a high school.
Not much to do with history degrees, as with most liberal studies courses you are at the mercy of a society that values other things, like repeating mistakes.Comment

Yup. It's one of the downsides of a capitalist society; you get paid based upon your monetary worth to a company or organization, not based on the contribution you make to society.I am graduating with a degree in social science education. Yeah I originally wanted to do the coaching thing, but for some reason I've just lost interest in that. Now if I stick with the teaching I'd like to do some work abroad which would probably end up including teaching English.I am graduating with a degree in social science education. Totally agree on the second part. Tunnel vision is a scourge of American society.Comment

Re: Anyone major in history?
My one professor keeps on telling me I should go somewhere in Spain or Italy and spend a few years teaching English like he did. I think about it but I would need NBA League Pass.Comment

Re: Anyone major in history?
I have a friend who graduated with a communications major and she has taught English in Spain and Argentina. Other than some homesickness it sounds awesome as all expenses are covered plus a paycheck.
I'm sure NBA League Pass would be available in Spain, Italy, Argentina etc. or something like it. No so convinced about Center Ice though.Last edited by thrashman; 09-04-2009, 02:08 AM.Comment

Re: Anyone major in history?
I thought about it years ago...talked to a few college professors. When their answers ranged from "being broke" to "librarian" it was the end for me.- The true measure of a man is how he treats someone who can do him absolutely no good.Comment

Re: Anyone major in history?
This sounds very familiar. I hope you have better luck with this approach than I did, as I spent several years barely scraping by. I can still not eat for a day or two and be fine if I have to. While this is a valuable skill if I ever get lost in the wilderness, the cost of developing it was not so pleasurable...Comment
