Re: Ohion Judge Orders Athlete Cannot Participate in Team Sports
I can see either side of the argument, but this I can't agree with. His only opportunity to go to college?Playing football in college isn't solely about going to the NFL. This judge basically took away his opportunity to go to college where he could have improved his station in life. He made a stupid decision yes, but when one of the goals of prison is rehabilitation a decision like this kills any chance that could have happened for this individual.
Work your *** off and get A's and B's and you can just as easily get academic scholarships as you can athletic ones.Comment

Re: Ohio Judge Orders Athlete Cannot Participate in Team Sports
Judge should be disbarred
Either lock him up or let him pursue educational opportunities.
I don't even understand the logic of the ban, but I would tend to guess that criminals who receive an education after imprisonment have a much better chance of becoming contributing members of society than one who do not
If the kid was really smart would the judge have barred him from attending school?Comment

Re: Ohio Judge Orders Athlete Cannot Participate in Team Sports
I can't say I have any sympathy for the kid as what he did was stupid, violent, and obviously a crime. However, the sentence makes no sense to me. What legal precedent is there where someone isn't allowed to seek employment in a certain field, here being sports. The only example I can think of is ex-cons in anything relating to firearms, but there the firearm is viewed as an enabler to crime, is football going to enable this individual to commit crime? I don't know, seems like a stretch. I just disagree with a lot of post sentence punishments such as this. He should do his time then be allowed to move on however he wishes. If a school wants to offer him, a convicted felon, a scholarship to play then that is their call and should not be the law's. Football could be a good place for this kid to stay out of trouble, and is likely his best avenue for a secondary education, I just can't agree with this judge's call.Comment

this is the entitlement generation...there is no right or wrong any longer, and everyone is supposed to receive a certificate of participation. i say we let the kid play, and make him captain while we're at it!!STEELERS INDIANS CELTICS

I'm pretty sure that in NJ he wouldn't be allowed to play contact sports in HS due to his age alone.Comment

Re: Ohio Judge Orders Athlete Cannot Participate in Team Sports
what does football have to do with an education? He has no scholarship offers for football anyways. But he can go to school TO LEARN if he chooses. I find it extremely funny that anyone thinks the "Judge" ruined his life. I guess that is the society we live in where no one is held accountable for what they do.My Fan Page http://theusualgamer.net/MyFanPage_Heelfan71.aspx

Re: Ohio Judge Orders Athlete Cannot Participate in Team Sports
that we should just let people do what they want to do...let this kid play football, because afterall, who should tell him otherwise? it would be unfair to prevent him from his dreams & aspirations, right? far be it from a judge to do nothing more than slap him on the wrist and put him in "time out" for a few minutes... that's called "entitlement" - no one is allowed to tell someone no anymore because who are any of us to stand in the way of what someone wants in life, even though they don't obey the rules - it's all subjective...STEELERS INDIANS CELTICS

Re: Ohio Judge Orders Athlete Cannot Participate in Team Sports
This kid made the choice to shoot someone in the face with a BB gun not once but twice. There have to be consequences to these actions. In fact I think the judge was pretty easy on him. He could have went to jail for 8 years. Instead he goes for 2 months and can't play sports the rest of the school year.
That sounds like a pretty light punishment to me. If this kid wanted to play sports in college or professionally then she should have known better not to go out and do drive bys with bb guns.
I applaud this judge. Looks like the law does still apply to these punk *** spoiled athletes. Aww poor kid, come on. what about the kid who got shot in the face twice?Last edited by PVarck31; 09-21-2009, 02:40 PM.Comment

Re: Ohio Judge Orders Athlete Cannot Participate in Team Sports
to clarify, he's on probation for five years and one of the terms of his probation is that he cannot play team sports. Thus he cannot play team sports for five years, not just the rest of the school year as you stated. This kid made the choice to shoot someone in the face with a BB gun not once but twice.
