Re: OS Pups Thread!
Well, first you have to get the puppy used to the leash. For that, just attach the leash to the collar and then let the puppy run around with it on and dragging for a while so it gets used to having it on. Of course you'll have to watch to make sure it doesn't get tangled/caught on things. After he's used to having it on then just sit on a chair or something and hold the end of the leash and just let the puppy run around to the end of the leash but don't try to pull/lead it just yet. After it is used to this then you can try gradually leading the puppy around on the leash.Steelers : IX, X, XIII, XIV, XL, XLIII

Re: OS Pups Thread!
I don't ever have them lead me. They are always on my side and i don't let them pull me. You're the leader, not them.
I do a lot of stop and go so they know when to sit and progress when I want them to. I've done this for years and my dogs eventually don't need a leash to walk them.
Keep the leash short and to one side. At the same time you are not tense and keeping it tight. Just be relaxed and do a lot of stop and go. When you stop you want them to sit so this is also a good time to teach them sit. I use simple commands: "STOP", "GO" You control the pace and you go as fast as you want, not what they want.
Always have treats with you. I pretty much have treats anytime I am doing something with my dogs and reward them for following commands correctly. Above all be patient and consistent because it will take some time and practice to get it right but when they do, it'll be an awesome moment.Comment

^^ For a moment I thought you were quoting the Dog Whisperer. That's pretty much all he says. I don't have a dog, but I'm sure these are some great tips.My Specs:

Re: OS Pups Thread!
I originally got it from a dog trainer when I was a kid but yeah, dog whisperer is spot on his tips and I laughed when I first saw the show and the way he does it because it was almost to a tee the way I was taught. I would definitely listen to him if you are starting to train your dog.Comment

One more... she decided she didn't want to walk anymore (we were at the lake) and layed down in the grass:

Re: OS Pups Thread!
I started teaching my dogs to walk on a leash around 10-12 weeks old. I don't know if you have a fence, but using my fence as a barrier helped a ton. So I always wanted my dog on the left of me when we walk, so I walked around my backyard with the dog on my left and the fence on her left, that way she couldn't roam too far off away from me sideways.

Re: OS Pups Thread!
this is taffy.. we got her when i was 9.. she passed away this february when i turned 21. my dad drove 4 hours to purchase her for $75 in the middle of a wal mart parking lot. taffy was the first and best dog i've ever known.
after taffy passed, we adopted lucy (left). we've had coco (right) for around 10 years.
lucy is a havanese mixed with lhasa apso, coco is a shih tzu.
