I decided to begin writing a screen play.

I just got my student loan check, quit my BS loan processing job. I decided WTF ill write a screen play and actually try to enjoy life.(till finish my MBA and pray this economy turns around) I figure I'm F*****D anyways once the loans are off deferral.

I am going to read some scripts make a template to get the formatting down and write the son of a bitch.

Then hire an agent and try to sell someone with money on the idea(I dont want to share the idea with anyone till I have some copyrighting done).

Anyone ever decide to try something like this?

Yes I know I am a little crazy but you only live once right?

I actually wrote a really cool story in high school, and almost got it published, but the publisher was shady. I've thought about doing some kind of screen play though. It would be a lot of fun.

What got me going was I was sitting at home sick from work watching TV. Predator 2 came on...............I had not seen this movie in years, It is so freaking bad I could not believe someone got paid to write this crap.

I told myself I could do a better job then that.

Re: I decided to begin writing a screen play.

Best of luck. Writing is my hobby and doing it professionally is my goal. I only started getting serious about screenwriting this year after attending film school in 07. I've done a lot of writing this year - most of it bad, but some good.

I'm mostly interested in television over film so I've been focusing on spec scripts for tv.

My advice is using Celtx if you don't want to spend the money on a screenwriting software. There is a lot of competition and you don't want format to kill your chances. I wouldn't risk trying to make it perfect on Word. I'm a big fan of movie magic, but people love final draft. There's no real difference with the exception of shortcut keystrokes.

Are you mostly interested in thriller or sci-fi (just basing this off the Predator mention)? I've been focusing on comedy, though thrillers are a favorite of mine as well.

Have you ever written anything before this attempt? Where are you going for scrrenplays? Make sure you're reading the real thing and not fan-made stuff. I can pm you a few good sites.

I've toyed with the idea of writing a screenplay but I could never get past the first page plus i'm always afraid i'm doing the format all wrong LOL

I once did an interesting '40s style noir/detective short story though i've long since lost it but I still remember details of it and i've tried a few times to expand it into something.

            Ah well good luck USF!

Im going the comedy route ....... Thanks for the support and format help. Formatting is a big concern of mine - along with fitting so many ideas in such a short amount of time. As soon as I get something done i cant wait to share it with the os community.

Download it. Don't let formatting affect you. You should concentrate on story development rather than the number of indents needed before starting dialogue.

Good luck finding an agent to even read the damn thing. Getting that to happen is perhaps the hardest part of the process!

I think that's awesome man. I wish you the best of luck. I actually wrote a screenplay, well half of one lol. My best friend is on the verge of getting a novel published. It can happen. Good luck man.

The thing I told myself is that I need to atleast try. If it doesnt work out it doesnt work out. I would regret not trying.

Re: I decided to begin writing a screen play.

Based on how mediocre most scripts are now I debated trying this out. It surely can't be too hard to do if all those idiots doing it now are able to write their drivel.

I'd say if you are going to do this to write it with non idiotic dialogue littered with present day type conversing. If you look at most of the good movies that have come out the last decade they are intelligently written and have minimal if at all present day type dialogue.

An example of present day dialogue? Having people say "whatever" as a reply to others or to situations in an apathetic way. This is idiotic and no need for it in movies because if the characters in the movie don't give a rip then wtf should the viewer be expected to? All hearing people say "whatever" in movies does is show me just how regressed this society has become in communicating and it is an embarrassment.

Also, another problem most writers do now is they make soooooooo many characters argue with each other over the most trivial of things. That isn't realistic and comes off as annoying.

If you are going to do this I'd be interested in reading your script via say a PM here.
