    Cyberwar

Today in class we learned of a new topic I was relatively unfamiliar with: Cyberwar

    Link:http://www.cbsnews.com/video/watch/?...in;contentBody

    Some Details:
    • There are 10,000's of attacks on the US every day
    • most attacks are done by the chinese government, russian government, russian mob
    • has the potential to take out power to the entire east coast
    • has the potential to blow up power generators used to fuel cities
    • one cyber attack managed to extort the state of Virgina $10 million (which they paid) The attacker is still at large
    • the Pentagon has been breached, and the person responsible was able to stay in the system for four days before being found.
and much much more. This is some really scary stuff and has the power to disrupt our way of living.

    Thoughts?

These kinda things happen more often then we'd like to think. There was a story last year about some guy who hacked into NASA and the Pentagon getting some rather valuable information.

Former (or not former, not sure) head of the NSA fully expects that something bad will come from cyberwar at some point soon. And he thinks that we arn't prepared at all for it.

            Re: Cyberwar

I learned my lessons from the last East Coast blackout and the 10 day blackout in Astoria(which ironically, is the neighborhood where the largest Con Ed plant in N.Y.C. is...just a few blocks from my house)

At my home in upstate N.Y......I've got set up for the springtime....appointments to install solar panels and 2 wind generators. These will generate all my homes power ++ enough to sell some back(if there is a problem...I guess that portion will be moot).
            I have my own well.
I have two wood burning stoves and one fireplace(and I'm surrounded by forest)
and finally....I've been buying fuel(diesel) that I have stored in tanks I bought for my vehicle.
I've got some other emergency items...but I don't want to go too far into it.
My family and I should be good for at least 1 full year in case of a true disaster.
The guys at work(who now know enough that they should be on the bandwagon but whatever...) break my balls a bit about it...and one guy asked me..."what are you going to do when your stuff runs out?....and then I have to fight just like them for everything?"
I told him...."I don't have to worry about my stores lasting longer than a year to live on......I just gotta live longer than you guys!"

            Things could get really ugly.
I truly...TRULY hope none of these things never happen.
            Scary.

If we couldnt handle hurricane Katrina, then I know for sure we our a long way off from handling a cyber attack on a massive scale that disrupted power or what not. It would be like that tv show Jericho, towns will become their own nation, with those with the most guns running the show.

Lets raise hands here, anyone think we aren't doing the same thing to other countries?

In the link posted, we admit that we do, and go far enough as saying America is number 1 in terms of cyber ability(?)

North Korea financed programs for this.

On "slow" news days you will hear about these stories. But with all that is going on with shootings, serial killers and everything else these cyberwars are not reported with as much vigor.

I have no doubt that something very bad will happen because of this in the near future.

We have begun outsourcing computer work to developing countries. Once these workers gain the skills they will sell their skills to the highest bidder.

People get too alarmed and severely underestimate the capabilities of our intelligence agencies.
