    Re: Going to the Dentist

btw - my incident that got me to go in was a tooth in the front on the bottom actually got looser and looser and eventually just came out, it was so freakin' scary that morning..i never want to face that again. i go every 6 months now and floss every night.

you MUST floss. even if you hate it just dedicate yourself to doing it at least once each night before bed. you will see that it will make so much a difference when you go to get cleanings and checkups.

        Re: Going to the Dentist

Most dentists will work with you in regards to that, especially for issues of an urgent nature such as a broken tooth. So don't let that keep you from going in. If you put it off you may end up developing a more disastrous and far more expensive problem. I know because I had an infection in my mouth once and the dentist said if I hadn't gone in when I did they'd had to take out ALL my upper teeth in the front instead of just the one tooth.

I guess it depends on your insurance. I typically pay $30, but they also offer a deeper cleaning for like $120 in which they put some magical medicine down in your gum lines that is supposed to get rid of any disease causing bacteria.

You really only need the deep cleaning if you have problems, otherwise the standard one should do the trick.

Typically the dentist has a tool that will measure the pockets around your teeth (space between the gum and tooth), the tighter and shallower they are the, the healthier your gums are. I think dentists tend to use this to gauge the overall health of you teeth and gums.

The process of getting the root canal wasnt bad, but the pain leading to it was incredible.
I just finished with this experience yesterday. I was holding back tears man honestly. Worst pain ever. Root canal was done yesterday. I still feel a little pain, but the majority has clearly ceased. I'm just a little sore right now. Thank God for insurance and a flex-spending account!

                  Re: Going to the Dentist

I didn't really go to the dentist when I was younger (parents were immigrants, couldn't afford dentists when they were kids and didn't know better) so when I was in my late teen years I had to get 2 root canals. I barely remember it anymore- it really wasn't that bad an experience from what I remember. The crown has held up strong throughout the years too.

Now I brush twice a day, floss daily, and use Listerine mouthwash twice a day. Funny how a little education goes a long way. I still get the occasional cavity but getting a filling is so easy nowadays that I don't even mind.

The only thing I'm nervous about is that I'm going to have to find another dentist soon when I move, and my dentist is probably not going to keep working forever- I've been going to him for more than 10 years now. Trust with a dentist is a tough thing to build.

Yeah I agree, that's what I missed a lot when I left Richmond, I had a great dentist there that I 100% trusted. This new girl i'm going to now, I don't know if I trust her yet, plus she's young so I'm not sure how much she really knows..

I would imagine so, when I had my root canal I had no insurance so I had to pay cash for everything and what a costly procedure it was. Hopefully it starts feeling better as my pain went away pretty quickly once the nerves were killed.

                        Re: Going to the Dentist

Worst part for me is the shot of novacaine. The last 2 cavities I've had (4 total in my life) I asked for no novacaine. The actual drilling and filling the teeth was less painful than the shots of novacaine I've had in the past.....so no novacaine for me in the future. The funny thing is - the last time I had a tooth filled, the Dentist kept asking me throughout "Are you sure you don't want me to give you a shot of novacaine?". I said yes. When it was all done she said that the reason she kept asking me was that the cavity was much deeper than she anticipated and was worried it would hurt too much. I figure if that didn't hurt, then no filling will hurt.

WTF Mike! No Novocaine! DAMN you are MAN! I tried that once, just once though. And that was very painful! I heard somewhere that Dentist had a real high rate in suicide. I don't know if that is true still, but I can see why. When you go see a Doctor you are usually sick and want to feel better. When you go to a dentist you feel fine until you leave then you are sore. Unless you have a real bad tooth ache before you went to the dentist. I hate going to the dentist more than anything.

                            Update time.

Alright went to the first one and they took the x-rays and what not. Then did an extreme cleaning with the metal picks and what not. Not too bad. Kinda scary but didn't really hurt. Then the dentist came in and looked at my broken tooth, then took out the laser thing and tested the decay/pits. Turns out I have 12 total cavities including my broken tooth. Broken tooth did indeed need a root canal.

Had the root canal today. I was as nervous but not nearly as much as the inital exam/cleaning. They sent me to a specialist in Norman (about 60 miles away). Nice place, people were very very nice and comforting. They gave me 3 shots, they were uncomfortable but bearable. Then didn't feel a thing. It was a deep root canal too. My jaw was sore from holding it open (thats what she said). Actually my headache from when i woke up this morning is what bothered me the most.

I go and get the crown put on Jan 4. Expensive though since it was a molar. $1,015. Oh well. This is the start of finally getting everything in order.

Getting the novacaine shots into my gums is actually the thing that makes me the most nervous should I ever have to have dental work done. Getting an injection into my soft skin or even having bloodwork done is one thing, but the thought of being awake while someone is pushing a needle into my hard gum tissue just makes me cringe. I'd probably ask for the NO to take me completely out of it for the whole procedure like when I had my wisdom teeth pulled/extracted.

They offered me that. They said they mainly give that to people that are really anxious and nervous. Also they rub some stuff on the gums first to numb it a bit so its not like a straight needle to gum. Sucked yea, but nothing too crazy. Just hurt for like 5 seconds. Its easily tolerable.
