    Freezing weather and pipes

Do you let your water drip when temperatures are below freezing?

Yes I do, it gets super cold (5 or lower) my pipes drip to prevent freezing.

Yes. I also leave the cabinet doors open as well so the heat in the house can reach the pipes. It protects them from freezing and cracking.

Just buy some insulation foam for your pipes. They sell it at Menards and Lowes.

Nope. However, we rarely see temperatures dip below 10 degrees here (though the all-time record low is -8 degrees).

It got down to -2 degrees a few years ago when I lived in West Virginia and there were no issues with pipes in the house.

People in the south are usually the only ones that do it. The reason is that more pipes are above ground and exposed. Up north, the pipes are all underground or in doors and are insulated well.

Well, I laugh at people who feel like they're going to die from a heat stroke when the temperature reaches the high 90s. Its just all about what your used to.

Edit..I let my water drip when it gets really cold.

As a former maintenence man from the South, but was raised in Wyoming...I can back up that the region is ill prepared for low tempatures. Not enough common sense and in most cases, no preperation.

As for the pipes, in sub freezing weather when you are aware your pipes are poorly insulated or exposed and you do not have time to correct that...yes, letting them drip helps but only to a point. Hot water lines will freeze first most of the times in equal conditions so a little faster flow is recommended. And as WazzuRC said open the cabinent doors for air flow.

If they do freeze don't panic. Do not put a direct heat sourse on the pipe but try to warm the area/pipes as much as possible but be prepared to shut off the water if the freezing has cracked a pipe.

Nope...we open up the outside faucets and shut off the valve inside, we have foam insulation on our exposed pipes in the crawl space, and I open the vent in said crawl space.

We had a week in the -20s last winter and had no issues at all. In fact, we had to purchase an air exchanger as our home is TOO well insulated and our humidity levels were hovering around 50%, which is bad in the cold due to the condensation on the inside of our windows that freezes.
