      Re: So I just purchased

Arg, my service engine light came on about 2 and a half months ago. For some dumb reason, i went to Pep Boys instead of Ford and spent over $1200 on the car and the light came back on for the exact same reason.

The light was for a secondary air pump. That in itself was around $600 and they did work to my body because my sway bar was "broken" and my springs were craptastic.

So i went to the guy right across from them and he seemed like a much more intellectual car person. First he laughed at my engine because it wasn't performing. With pushing 200 horses i should be able to do burn outs without a problem. So he said lets start with the basic, changed the air filter which Pep boys didn't do, not only was it crushed it was also black.

He then changed all my engine wires because they were rusty as heck. He said lets go from there and see if it comes back on. So i'm driving around for about 2 days and it pops back on.

Now i go back and he spends a day wit the car trying to get some info and to me and his suprise, the people he contacted claims my car doesn't have a secondary air pump. The mechanic guy told me to just go to Ford then since he doesn't want to guess the problem. He has to know exactly why the pump isn't working because it is a brand new one; and he can't get the schematics because they said it doesn't have one.

So it seems as if this car of mine is from California where most if not all cars are suppose to have secondary air pumps.

I'm spent over $2000 on this issue and its self present. Not only that, but i brought a 40 series flow master exhaust. 2 weeks after i brought it, i was spending and hit a bump and started to hear some grinding, definitely thought it was the exhaust. It rattles everytime i'm on an uneven surface.

I love this car, but its costing me

Im sorry you're having issues bro.

One thing i've learned from me and my brothers having tons of used cars through the years is this.

Used american cars do not age well at all. And you'd think because its an american car it would be cheaper to fix, but you'd be wrong.

        Good luck.

With the rattling of the exhaust, its probably just hitting against something. I had the same problem, it would rattle every time I stop and go. So I checked and it was rattling against a loose piece of the frame. I took a hammer to that piece of the frame and its fine now.

Genius, I do think it's hitting something but i'm not 100% sure. I'm just going to bring the car to Ford Thursday so they can do the secondary air injector and gear shift line. Their going to charge me two arms and two legs but i rather have it done right.

Now it only starts in Neutral and rolls in park....i don't understand why at all, it wasn't doing that tell about two days ago.

If your not positive its the exhaust then the rattling might be coming from your engine. Especially if your hearing it when shifting gears. It could be your motor mounts. Thats if your not sure its your exhaust. When I bought my car it kept jumping making a rattling noise when I shifted gears so I finally decided to check my motor mounts and I found out my front an rear mounts were cracked.

Wow that sucks. I never trust anything i see in commercials that seem shady . I was going to buy a used mustang after the new '11 models come out...now this makes me a bit unsure...and I can't think of any other used cars that are nice for cheap. And I was amazed at how much car knowledge you all have, but i don't know why I did..it is a sports forum after all...I guess I was just thinking more about the video games all this time..

Hey if you can find a Prelude either 4th (92-96) or 5th (97-01) generation you should pick it up. They are cheap and beautiful. Plus its a honda so it lasts forever. There aren't made anymore so its also a classic.

Definitely the exhaust, comes from the back driver side. I really don't hear anything until i go over a bump? if the road is perfectly paved its fine, but once it gets bumpy, all you hear is something rattling/grinding. I really do think its either the exhaust or something griding against my tire then, not even completely sure.

But what really irks me is the shifter. It only started after i brought to a mechanic too. He told me it was slightly bad which i knew because it was hard to move. But now it doesn't start in park, only in neutral. I think he took it off thinking i was going to replace it that same day, but when i said no i don't have any money; he must of put it back on horribly.

The service light is for the secondary air injector which isn't really affecting the cars performance because the way I hear it, its an additional injector to clean the air coming out of the exhaust (Mandatory in California but not here in Connecticut). I replaced my air pump and all the wiring in my engine. So the engine finally sounds awesome but now here comes another problem.

Yea I hear you. I hate fixing something then another thing breaks. I finally replaced all the parts that needed to be replaced from when I bought my car, then all of a sudden my gas gauge (electronic) doesn't work and my speed-o-meter randomly drops to 0 while I'm driving and will stay there for the rest of the ride.

With the shifter I would make him fix it. His job is to make your car better when you bring it to him not worse.

It is probably your heat shield rattling. Bolts will become rusted/loose and cause it to rattle. Simple fix, nothing to go crazy about.

I have a '96 Mustang, it will hit 200K miles either next week or the week after that. I'm at 199500ish right now. I'm pretty excited about seeing the rollover LOL

The car has had a few issues over the years but it's hanging in there. Around 50K miles something happened and the car overheated and shut off on me. I had to get some head gasket work done, I don't really remember. A couple alternaters here and there and a few water pumps too. I had to get the transmission rebuilt around 150K miles, but I had a buddy do it at cost so it wasn't so bad. I had to put a couple hundred into it a few months ago to replace some sensors, but that's nothing. The only problem with it now is my delayed wipers don't work, they just work on LO and HIGH, not a big deal, just an annoyance.

Overall it has been a good car, I'll drive it as long as it'll let me.
