Why is proper grammar dying on the internet?

Reading these message boards along with others it has became painfully clear that proper English grammar is going the way of the Dodo bird. I have found this to be especially true amongst younger posters (as in born after 1990) but that is not to say it is exclusive to that generation.

So I need to ask what is so hard about speaking, or well typing in proper English when communicating with others?

I don't really know. Maybe it has something to do with schooling, or maybe it's just laziness.

I think its because of the text messaging and people have carried that over to the forums.

Some people are just too lazy and well I believe others probably are just not smart enough to grasp the concepts of English grammar.

I think a lot of it has to do with people accessing the site from mobile phones and such - they just try to get their message across in as few keystrokes as possible.

Not trying to justify it though: i h8 wen i see posts lik this.

We are on the internet. I am on OS on my Iphone 90% of the time and am not worried about proper grammar for the most part. Now I try not to spell words wrong or completely ruin the English language, but this is nothing new. Grammar has been dying on the internet for awhile.

Now people who misspell every other word, or never use periods are ridiculous. But Grammar Nazi's IMO are just as annoying as people who TaLk LyK DiS.

I always do. Half of the time you'll see that my posts are edited, simply because I went back and caught grammatical errors or my sentence(s) had poor structure.

Frankly, I find it much more difficult to type in some sort of shorthand notation, because I would have to think about how I would rearrange my word so that it's still somewhat phonetically similar to the actual word. Not to say that it's less lazy because of that, it definitely is. I don't understand why people, especially girls around my sister's age (though I think she's growing out of it, turning sixteen next month), find the need to post in random capital or lowercase letters when it's unnecessarily needed.

              God, I hate MySpace.

LOL but if your posting on the go as in texting on a mobile phone that can be hard to do at times. If I'm posting on my computer I always use spell check and make sure my post is somewhat coherent so I don't get flamed lol.

Agreed, TyPinG LyK DiS, takes too much time lol and is annoying. Typing "regular" just isn't cool for 8th graders though.

People are lazy and uneducated. As the internet grows it becomes more mainstream and more uneducated lazy people, means very incohernet posts.

I do have to wonder about the quality of English teachers in this country as every time you point this out to people the seemingly canned answer is always something to the effect of "Who r u my english teecher?"

Well, No Child Left Behind certainly doesn't help, but as more and more people use the internet and things like facebook and message boards, you'll get more and more nonsense and terrible grammar by people who are either not very bright or weren't taught right. Oh and brain dead music like Soulja Boy certainly doesn't help.

People just want to get their point across quickly and move on to the next thread I guess. I always try to make sure my posts are grammatically correct and properly punctuated, but I've seen plenty of butchered English on the internet. What I really can't stand is people who use excessive amounts of street slang or gangsta speech or whatever its called.
