Re: Why is proper grammar dying on the internet?
The clip. Anyone could read the transcript, but it's nothing like the video and watching him stammer.
Okay, good... I thought I had messed up my adverbs all of my life. Blzr, that Stewie clip reminds me of the "cool whip" bit a while back as well.
It's comical when an individual poster doesn't use proper grammar/spelling (for either ignorance, laziness or idiocy) and another poster corrects the error(s) that a revolt starts in the thread criticizing the corrector.Originally posted by Gibson88Anyone who asked for an ETA is not being Master of their Domain.
It's hard though...especially when I got my neighbor playing their franchise across the street...maybe I will occupy myself with Glamore Magazine.Comment

Re: Why is proper grammar dying on the internet?
I agree. Although, just for the hell of it, let's get REAL technical with your sentence there. In actuality, you also need commas within the uncle Jack part, and here's why:
1) If you commonly refer to him as Uncle Jack, then the "uncle" also needs to be capitalized because in your usage, Uncle Jack is his name. In that case, the sentence would read, "I helped my Uncle Jack, off a horse."
2) If he is simply one of your uncles who happens to be named Jack, then Jack is separated from uncle, and the sentence would read, "I helped my uncle, Jack, off a horse."
However, to write it as you did, minus the commas, does nothing to prevent the inappropriate connotations of the sentence.
Punctuation is key
(If it helps my credibility on the subject, I graduate in May with a degree in journalism from Penn State.)
The comma should not be there. Read it and pause at the comma because, quite frankly, that is what a comma should make you do when you are reading aloud -- pause.
I helped my Uncle Jack ... off a horse.
Pause at the ellipses. It doesn't sound right, does it? It would still be "I helped my Uncle Jack off a horse." The comma does not belong and serves no purpose in your sentence.
You got the second part correct though. If he was one of a few uncles whom you don't typically refer to as "Uncle Jack," you would set "Jack" off in commas.Originally posted by DaImmaculateONeHow many brothers does Sub-zero running around in his clothing? That's not right at all.

Re: Why is proper grammar dying on the internet?
You would think that, in a house with a high school English teacher and a journalism major, he would speak better than he does. But he goes to a daycare where the adults speak HORRIBLE grammar, so he picks up terrible habits.Originally posted by DaImmaculateONeHow many brothers does Sub-zero running around in his clothing? Re: Why is proper grammar dying on the internet?
"Uncle Jack" might need a verb in the sentence, and he doesn't have one in "I helped my Uncle Jack off the horse."
"I helped my Uncle Jack get off the horse."
I think that's technically what it should be. I'm not sure, though.
Still, "I helped my Uncle Jack, off the horse." is not right, no matter how you look at it.Originally posted by DaImmaculateONeHow many brothers does Sub-zero running around in his clothing? No one can seem to kill the right one.Comment

Re: Why is proper grammar dying on the internet?
I think you're right in that the sentence is flawed to begin with.
"Uncle Jack" might need a verb in the sentence, and he doesn't have one in "I helped my Uncle Jack off the horse."
"I helped my Uncle Jack get off the horse."

Actually the pause is the problem, but it shouldn't be. Because you think they should pause Jack from off. But a lot of times we say that word Jack a little longer and then say off after we hold the Jack. If you know what I mean?Comment

Re: Why is proper grammar dying on the internet?
In any case, I'm pretty sure it's "jackoff."
lol
The only reason you think there should be a pause is because of the connotation of "jack off."
Try saying "Uncle Tim" in stead of "Uncle Jack." No pause needed.Originally posted by DaImmaculateONeHow many brothers does Sub-zero running around in his clothing? No one can seem to kill the right one.Comment
