That's the best case right there to only give prepaid phones to teens.

While I don't think Verizon is to blame, you'd think they would give a courtesy call after say about $1000, $5000 or $10K. Credit card companies call you if they see something out of the ordinary to make sure everything is okay.

T-Mobile offers family allowances, and blocking of any and all services from your online profile for any and all lines on the account.

If the father told them to restrict his kids phone from doing anything other then making calls and sending texts and yet he was able to surf the internet and in turn drive the bill up then Verizon should be waving those charges asap. If he didnt then hes screwed and Verizon shouldnt do a damn thing for him.

Like someone in the comments of that article said, anyone that gives a 13 year old an unlocked, unlimited cell phone should reap what they sow. That's just plain stupidity. And quite frankly I and many others in this country are getting tired of people's stupidity being blamed on others. People need to take responsibility for their actions. I see nothing wrong with this guy working with the carrier to try to come up with a more realistic number but I do see something wrong with his overall attitude about who is to blame. And like father, like son, his son will grow up with that attitude of entitlement and absolute absolvement of personal responsibility as well.

              /end rant LOL

Maybe you missed this in the article...

Estarija said he asked Verizon to restrict his son's usage to phone calls and texts, but the bill shows his son downloaded about a million and a half kilobytes of data with his phone while racking up the massive charges.
If thats the case then Verizon screwed up here.

Actually the thing is on the contract there is always language that says "what's PRINTED HERE SUPERCEDES anything any rep told you. EVER. NO MATTER WHAT. Even if he swears on his Mom's grave. THIS PRINTED CONTRACT COUNTS. "

Re: When you dont read your cell phone contract

Don't really see them making them pay this. I pay $10 a month for data on my phone and use $8,000 worth of data a month. So it's not like it actually cost theses companies the amount they charge.

Does it say what kind of phone he had? My sister has an iPhone and used 800,000 kb of info on our last bill. This kid used 1.5 million???? Verizon screwed them if they sold him a data heavy phone and didn't make them get a data plan or restrict it

So does at&t. Before I had my data plan I had all data blocked. No internet and no MM messages.

The Chef - I didn't miss it, I call BS. If he has it in writing then yeah it's VZW's fault but either it's just something he thought up to say *OR*, and this is quite possible, it's true and he was too stupid to get it in writing. And did you notice it said he asked but it doesn't say anything about what was said?

Also, as pitchingcoach said, a contract supercedes what a rep will tell you. Heck half of those reps will say anything to get a sale.

I'm just tired of adults acting as if they're victims in all these various aspects of life. Anyone with half a brain that was in his situation would have:

                      a) not got an unlocked phone for a 13 year old
                      b) if they did, get it IN WRITING, that there is a lock on the usage

The bottom line is this guy is wrong to blame someone else. And if he did have that in writing that there was a cap then I'm sure he would have brought that up in the article. Is the amount ridiculous? Yes. Should VZW pair it down? Yes simply to keep a customer and not look greedy. But they don't have to if he really used that much. And this guy has no business copping this attitude considering the situation.

haha, that's true since I work for VZW, but i'd say that even if it was Sprint or AT&T to be 110% honest!! I just see stuff like this and it burns me up. Eastwood is right, most of society nowadays is a bunch of whiny, no-spine, no responsibility, crybabies!!

I know! That is why I put I agree with you to a point, but as a business I think you owe it to your costumer to let them know what is going on.

While I agree with you 100% and I am the first person to accept responsibility for my own actions, don't you think this case stretches that a little bit?

Don't you think there should have been some sort of courtesy call to this family to inform them something was amiss with this situation? There is NO WAY anyone would intentionally run their bill up to 21k in a month.

There is a difference between taking responsibility for your own actions and having something happen that you had no idea was even possible.

I personally love vzw and even had a great experience once a year or two ago which was somewhat similar to this where after starting a new job which required making a lot personal calls I got notified by them that I wasn't on the best plan based on my usage. They changed the plan I was currently on, and made it retroactive to the start of the billing cycle to make it so I wouldn't have to pay an outlandish bill.

I don't see why something similar in this situation couldn't be worked out.
