That may be true, but whenever Americans hear act of terrorism, they immediately think the Axis of Evil.

These days, it's vital to get the facts straight before Cleetus and the Michigan Militia go berzerk.

For all we know, he's just a mentally ill guy who said he was part of Al-Qaida.

I'm not saying he was, but preliminary reports hardly make me believe the sky is falling.
From what I've read, he is apparently on a terrorist watch list.

This plane was coming into American from Norway I believe, so no idea about their security standards. Also apparently it was fireworks according to the first news source to pick up the story.

edit: Correction, it was from Amsterdam.

I believe that is just what they compared it to. The yahoo link says it was a mixture of powder and liquid that failed to explode and the passengers heard a firework-like "pop" and saw a "glow."

Which is odd, because none of the Axis of Evil states have been associated with the planning stages of al-Qaeda operations.

Given the amateur hour nature of the attack, it seems unlikely that it was al-Qaeda. The reason that al-Qaeda is as feared as they are is because they're very good at what they do. Blaming this on al-Qaeda would be like Iran labeling the Clown Berkley kids as CIA. Sure there's a chance, but I'd bet all of my Pokemon cards that he's just a wannabe.

                It's quoting a US Congressman.

And you're saying U.S. Congressmen are trustworthy?

I trust that the Ranking Member and former Chair of the Homeland Defense Committee could find out whether or not a person was on a terrorist watch list.

Chances are, if you think you know more about the "terrorist watch list status" than a person who has actually seen and probably had input into the creation of the watch list, you're a nut job.
