Ever heard of "cruel and unusual punishment"? The girl is 12.
How bout this? Let's set the crime for speeding at $5. How many people do you think it's going to slow down? Sounds just as ridiculous as your scenario.

Now you see the school's side. Whatever they were doing in the past wasn't working so they upped the ante. As long as the kids and parents knew ahead of time, I don't see an issue.

If it was such an issue, why didn't her parents (or the parents of other kids) raise hades before it got put in place? School and school districts don't do this sort of stuff in some secret batcave and without getting the go ahead from the school board.

It wasn't a problem until THEIR kid was THAT kid.

Cruel and unusual punishment? Ask your mom/dad/grandparents what would've happened to them in the same circumstances 20, 30, 40 years ago. Then ask yourself how "Cruel and unusual" this is. The pussification of our society is ridonkulous.

I'm almost positive if I asked my dad/grandpa what would of happened 30 or 40 years ago he will tell me the teacher would of whipped him and made him clean it and then it would be over with. I doubt kids were arrested for doodling on a desk or for even greater things.

I dont know about you but I'd rather have the teacher whip me then have a cop arrest me.

Ok I have stepped out of this debate for a while now. This what I think we all have learned.

              1) Some people feel it was right to arrest her
              2) Some of us feel it was extreme/overboard

Each side believes strongly about their point of view. So neither side is going to agree with the others side.

Pretty much can bet your life savings on that.

I bet she gets mad ups from her peers for being the one that got arrested in school.

On a serious note, zero-tolerance has to really mean zero-tolerance for the protection of every other student and teacher in the school.

Would you rather they beat the child in front of the other students like they did back in the day? The punishment never fit the crime at that time. When is it justified to inflict pain on a child?

I am not saying I 100% agree with the punishment, but its not my place. If the rules clearly state vandalism is an arrestable offense, then to uphold the RULES, it has to be done.

Not exactly. I see both sides clearly, but I also happen to be a 2nd year teacher and know the consequences all too well if the kids think you are bluffing when you try to lay down the law.

If they put the policy in place, it had to be followed. You risk losing the rest of the "would-be" offenders if you back down.

Ex. Today, the school policy is not to have a cell phone out while in class. If seen or heard the teacher has to take it. A kid had it out for maybe 5-10 seconds and I saw it. He basically lied and said he didn't have a cell phone. Instead of arguing with him I had another student go get the assistant principle. Took about 5-6 minutes of real time for the phone to "re-appear" for the admin, but I probably won't have another cell phone issue with that class.

And yes, it was a first offense (first one I've seen out all year).
