Caging up such a smart and powerful predator is probably not a good idea.

The crazy thing is, Killer whales have NEVER killed a person in the wild. Yet, there have been a handful deaths by captive whales.

Conclusion: These things don't enjoy being locked in a small aquarium for very long, and get pissed off.

Fix: Stop keeping them captive. Leave it at dolphins.

I was talking to my gf about this earlier, and like I said to her, I have a VERY hard time being angry at the animal in these instances. They're just doing what they do, and then people are shocked and upset when they kill someone while being kept captive.

It's like surfers that are bitten by sharks, and the shark is made out to be evil, and the surfer a hero. Ummm... the shark was just being a shark, how can you be mad at it?

At any rate, it's too bad someone had to die, but I just have a hard time finding any sympathy... honestly, I feel worse for the whale.

It boggles my mind that people see Orcas as playful Shamu water spurting friendly mammals. They are big, powerful, smart, and aggressive predators. It's like Chris Rock said when Roy got attacked by the Tiger, "Everybodies mad at the Tiger, talking about the Tiger went crazy, that Tiger aint go crazy that Tiger went TIGER!"

A Killer Whale is an apex predator and it needs to be treated as such.
As Shaquille O'Neal left the Suns practice court, he yelled out, "Alvin's the coach. We must be the Clippers. And I must be Olowokandi. Nooooo!"

Sad day for this persons family. Although was it really a good idea in the first place to keep a killer whale captive and pissed?

That Chris Rock statement is as On Point as you can get. At least once a month I'm quoting it to somebody concerning some animal attack, or even with situations involving strictly human beings.

Its a modern version of the Scorpion fable.

Do this today: Instead of $%*#!@& on a game you're not going to play or movie you're not going to watch, say something good about a piece of media you're excited about.

Do the same thing tomorrow. And the next. Now do it forever.

Good post. There's a reason they're called WILD animals. Even if it was born in captivity, it is still far from domesticated and tame and I'm sure the people that work with them understand that and that they are taking their chances when working with these animals, especially one as big as a Killer Whale.

Teaching top predators how to do flips and other tricks is always a recipe for disaster. I love it when the trainers say that they can "read" their animals to prevent attacks.

That's the 3rd strike for this orca. Wonder what will happen to it.

Screw Sea World if they punish the whale. It is a wild animal in captivity. One of those deaths from this whale was a person that jumped the fence and decided to swim with the whale while the place was closed.
