Re: Killer Whale kills trainer at Sea World
Then why are they not called Killer Dolphins? huh! Also I would like to point out this is not the killer whale's fault. He was just being a killer whale. This is what they do. I think Sea World should get rid of the whale though. But they look like they are not going too.Comment

Re: Killer Whale kills trainer at Sea World
"Killer Whales" are perhaps the smartest mammals only second to humans. Having them go from a lush ocean full of family friends and limitless journeying (they travel like 150 miles a day) to a small *** pond with limited whale contact being forced to use their insane intelligence to do party tricks for a bunch of idiot spectators puts them into a nuts depression. There is a good article floating around that talks about this.Comment

Re: Killer Whale kills trainer at Sea World
Caging up such a smart and powerful predator is probably not a good idea.
The crazy thing is, Killer whales have NEVER killed a person in the wild. Yet, there have been a handful deaths by captive whales.
Conclusion: These things don't enjoy being locked in a small aquarium for very long, and get pissed off.
Fix: Stop keeping them captive. Leave it at dolphins.Comment

Re: Killer Whale kills trainer at Sea World
"They have never killed a human in the wild," said Nancy Black, a marine biologist with Monterey Bay Whale Watch. That's mostly because, unlike sharks, killer whales don't frequent near-shore areas where people swim. (Even shark attacks on humans are generally accidental, experts say, with sharks mistaking humans for seals or other typical food.)
Anyway here's another quote from that article:
"I just think the killer whale may have wanted a social companion and just held her under too long," Black told LiveScience. "I would think the killer whale didn't do it intentionally but more as a play thing. They're so powerful." She added killer whales don't have to come up for air as often as a human might and could reasonably hold someone underwater for 15 to 20 minutes.
It was also noted in another article I read that the trainer didn't have any traumatic marks on her. She just had a few scrapes. It's not like the whale tried to eat her.Indianapolis Colts

Not to be glib, but this is what happens when you try to "tame" wild animals. I feel sorry for the women who was obviously highly regarded in her field. But when you start riding around on whales and having them do tricks and whatnot, you get what you get sometimes. Killer whale indeed.Steam: BahnzoComment

Re: Killer Whale kills trainer at Sea World
Count me in the group that thinks the Orca shouldn't be punished. I agree this incident is sad (i actually know part of her family if the local news is correct), but this just highlights the problems with the system. If Orcas really are that intelligent, I imagine I would be pretty pissed if I were them. Put me in an 8x8 glass room and just be used for party tricks, and I am sure I would have a momentary lapse in judgement or an angry moment too. Like others have said, if the animal is called a killer whale, it may be dangerous...Comment

Re: Killer Whale kills trainer at Sea World
I doubt the killer whale knew that she could not survive being submerged under water for too long. If anything, for it to have continued socializing with her and other trainers for so long, it probably started believing that they were much alike.
When I hear about an animal purposely wanting to kill someone or animal, I think about it using its teeth. I realize not all animals do this and killer whales will undoubtedly use their strength to kill other animals, but isn't that done for protection and food? They are intelligent animals, it definitely knew it wasn't in danger. It was probably playing."It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace
