    Axis & Allies Anyone?

I don't know if any of you have ever played the board game Axis & Allies, but I always found it to be pretty fun to play against my dad when I was younger. However, I haven't played the game in years because I didn't really have anyone to play it with (most of my friends have no interest in the game, unfortunately).

I found this site http://gamesbyemail.com/ that has several games which you can play against other people online, and one of those games is W.W. II (basically, it's Axis & Allies).

Rather than post how it works, I'll just post what the site says:

How does it work? Simple. Pick a game, then tell us your email address and your opponent's email address. You will then make the first move and your opponent will receive an email with the game in it. When they move you will receive an email and play continues.

Is it real time? No, the idea here is to play when you have the time. Instead of arranging to meet at a site and dedicate a half hour to finishing a game, you make your moves when you get a free minute. Yes, the game takes a bit longer, but you have all the time in the world to think out your moves and you can play many games simultaneously. Set is the only real-time game.

Who can I play? Anybody with an email address and a browser that meets these easy requirements. You can choose your opponent instead of picking from a list in a room. Besides gaming, you can send messages through the game and keep in touch a little more often.

Do I or my opponents need to sign up first? No, a new 'profile' is automatically created when a new email address is used. The address is sent information about the profile, how to change passwords and such.

What is a profile? A 'profile' is the collection of information we have about a player. Initially it is blank except an email address and an assigned password. No other information is required to play. We encourage you to read our privacy statement.

Can I play from more than one email address? Yes, simply edit your profile by signing in to your My Profile page and then add addresses. Add as many as you wish. New games will be sent to every address in your profile. Each move will be sent to the last email you played that particular game from. Reminders will be sent to all your addresses. You can mark addresses you don't want to receive game emails as 'Inactive'. Games started with 'Inactive' addresses will automatically get routed to your active addresses.

Can I play my games from someone else's computer? Yes, simply sign in to your My Turns or My Games page. There you can check the status of each of your games and make moves if it is your turn.
Anyways, I found this site a few days ago and have had a lot of fun so far (though I'm pretty awful at the game due to not playing it in so long).

Do any OSers have any interest in getting a game going on there?

I bought Axis and Allies around 3 years ago and I've never actually played it. But this or a game of Risk sounds fun.

Man, me and some buddies played a game of Axis&Allies a few years back and I don't know if we read the rules wrong or what but that game went on forever.

We actually had to move the table we were playing on a few times into a spare bedroom (thank god we were all bachleors back then) because it stretched over the course of WEEKS.

Finally, we started forming non traditional alliances to get people off the board (4 of us playing) but I'm not recalling if anybody actually won.

My friends and I would play in High School all the time. We'd go over the one guys place and basically play all night long. It was a TON of fun. Oh how I sometimes miss those simpler times...

Second greatest board game I've ever played, behind Settlers of Catan.

The only problem is that it takes a long time, especially with the better balanced revised edition rules. After we bought our new dining room table we moved our old one into the kitchen which is perfect for a long term game across weekends.

Another website for "generic" versions of games is:

Play AsoBrain's Java Multiplayer Games: Xplorers Settlers, Toulouse, Match! and RoadBlock

They have Catan and Carcasonne on there, plus a couple others.

When I discovered this game in the early 1990's as a teenager my friends and I played it non-stop for about a 3 year period. We always had the game going and as soon as one finished we'd set it back up and start over. I had a table that it was just always set up on so we could leave it if need be...absolutely loved the game. I have three copies of it in my game closet now (AA, AA Europe, AA Pacific), but I haven't played it in about 15 years or so.

Axis & Allies is basically a more complex version of Risk, and it also deals specifically with World War II. I enjoy Risk, as well, but Axis & Allies is more fun, IMO (though it also has a much steeper learning curve).
