the OP posted a story, the title says "when will wal mart learn"

he posted a fact about wal mart not changing codes(or the system) on their PA system which has been posted on the net...In result of that, this recent example is not the first incident that a random person was able to access the PA...

The actual story may be bigger than what the subject was...

But instead someone tries to say the op is blaming walmart...

      Typical attack/defend debate..
Why are you getting so defensive?

I'm on the same page with the OP and agreed with him that they probably should look to change the way they operate their PA system.

But as I pointed out, with a national code, if they change it tomorrow, the new one will be out on the internet tomorrow.

The story here is what the idiot said, not Wal Mart.

      Where did I attack anyone?

I think its funny that when I saw the headline I knew who the OP was. Nothing wrong with it but you post a lot of stories about walmart.

        They should change the code.

im not being defensive, excuse me if it seems that way....

            Its just comprehensive reading...

We all know the OP has alot of Wal-Mart threads and to some people it may seem like he was blaming Wal-Mart for the slurs...

How hard is it to make it so you have to enter a personal employee code to use the PA system? That way, you know exactly who either used the code or gave the code out.

I don't know if this is an attempt to belittle or not.

I read the story just fine and my comment was with regards to the comments of people who are blaming Wal Mart and saying things like they can never go back.

It was clearly an egregious act, but I feel bad for those people from the story who are holding Wal Mart accountable for this.

That is all I meant, there was never any disrespect given to gotmadskillz or anyone in this thread, I still don't understand why you tried to make it out that way.

I think he's saying that Walmart has to step up and say they need to change their PA system policy/protocol or whatever. They are getting a free pass on this, when it shouldn't be that EASY for an idiot to get on the PA system in the first place.

Extreme example. Somebody got shot....why? A loaded gun was left sitting out in plain view. You didn't do the shooting but you certainly made it more likely to happen.

I work at Wal-Mart, and it's absurdly easy to make PA announcements. There is a phone at both Food Door and GM door you can make PA announcements from. You pick up the phone, press 3 buttons on the phone, speak into the phone, and you can make a PA announcement the whole store can hear. They no longer let employees make PA announcements, but that wouldn't prevent anyone from doing it if they knew how. You could actually do it from any phone in the store, if you knew how.

And again, I'm not arguing with that.

But when it comes down to ultimately who is to blame here, or who we should throw the blunt of our anger at, it isn't Wal Mart. It is the idiot who said what they said.

I'm not seeing it as an "either-or" situation. BOTH are equally responsible.

If a fight broke out in my classroom and I wasn't in there like I should have been. I'd be in just as much trouble as the kids that were doing the fighting.

A company with unlimited resources like Walmart, this should be a non-issue. We aren't talking about a mom and pop store that can't afford to do better.

I disagree that they are comparable situations.

You are an adult responsible for high school kids (if I recall correctly). Whereas this is a business that deals with a multitude of customers.

I still think I am being misunderstood though, I agree that they should do something about the PA system. I don't see why it couldn't be something that is unique to each location.

I just think people are way to quick to point the finger in directions where they shouldn't as a way of deflecting the blame from where it actually lies.

I worked at Wal-mart when I was in high school(and a few months after). I was never told what the code was to use the PA. but I never needed to use it anyway. I worked in the Dairy department and half my time was spent in the cooler away from the customers and managers(they didn't like the cold).

even further back, I worked at K-Mart(before they had their bankruptcy issues and most the stores in Texas closed down). their system didn't even have codes. you just picked up the phone and pushed "page" button. lol

I had the greatest store manager there though. he would make the most random store announcement over the PA. nothing that people would be angry about though. just stuff that would make people laugh.

I've done retail for the last 7 years for two very large retailers, neither have any sort of code for the paging system. You just hit the page button and say what you need to say. I've experienced minimal problems with people messing around with it, but it happens here and there. The fact that Wal-Mart has a code puts them ahead of many retailers.

We do have codes for answering transferred phone calls. Nothing that anything with half a brain couldn't figure out on their own though.

This is just a case of people overreacting.

I love a Wal-Mart PA prank as much as the next guy (see: "Michael Vick, please report to pet supplies"), but this was a tad over the line.
