Any OSers from or near Portsmouth, VA?

Uncle Sam is sending me down to Portsmouth Va to attend some training next week until mid-July and was wondering if any fellow OSers could give me some tips on nice places to go, things to do, places not to go, or just any information you feel is useful.

I have some friends down in Norfolk and I've heard mixed things from them haven't heard too much information on Portsmouth.

    Thanks.

Born and raised in the Tidewater area and Portsmouth is just awful. Norfolk, like any other aspiring city has it's good and bad places. It really depends on what you like doing during your free time. Obviously, Williamsburg, Yorktown and Jamestown are nearby for historical aspects. Bush Gardens is also located in Willamsburg and Kings Dominion is just north of Richmond in Doswell, VA if you like amusement parks.

VA Beach has plenty to offer, especially as it gets hotter out. Plenty of tourist things to do in and around the main beach areas. The beach area also gets alot of major concert tours that roll through as well. It all depends aon what you are looking for.

born and raised in the area too...Portsmouth is awful just like he said. Norfolk and Va Beach are good places to go for a decent night life. Hampton and Newport News are located on the other side of the water, they are trying to build these two cities up so im sure you can find something to do.

What are some of your interests?!?

Thanks for the replies sounds like Portsmouth sucks. My interests are typical of any 21 year old lol.Drinking, sporting events, etc.I'm also a big history buff so I'll have to check out some of the historical aspects of the area. Any sports bars you guys recommend going to in the area? Any local restaurants you would recommend?

Also my wife plans on visiting me at least once while I'm there so it looks I'll be going to Virginia Beach.

Not sure how much free time I'll have. This is a very hard school and If I fail it will be ugly. Will probably only go out on the weekends to drink and what not.

How far is Portsmouth from the D.C. area? Would be cool to go there for a day.

About 2.5 hours give or take depending on traffic.

As for history there is plenty of that around Virgina. You will be close to Williamsburg. If you go to DC you will pass quite a few civil war battlefields on the way. Then of course DC will have plenty of history.

I've lived in this area all my life also. I actually live in Newport News which is 20-25 minutes from Portsmouth. I saw that you said you enjoy sporting events. Don't know how you feel about hockey but I enjoy going to Norfolk Admiral games. The season goes on a couple weeks into April so check them out if you get the chance.

Also, as others have stated, there is plenty to do in Va. Beach for a 21 year old. You'll have fun there. If you got anymore question just shoot me a PM man.

was stationed at Ft Monroe for 2 years in 2000-2001. Theres enough stuff to do down there to get you in trouble lol.

I dont remember if it was considered Newport News or not, but there was this on renovated area with cobblestone roads, there was a restaurant we used to go to called Goodfellas. Always was a fun time. I believe they had a bar there as well.

Norfolk, specifically bar Norfolk with Jillians in the same building. Spent many a night puking up 64 and trying to get it all out before the tunnel.

              Enjoy it bro!!!

Also, Norfolk has the Tides, who are now Baltimore's AAA club. When I lived there, they were the Mets AAA team. Although the park is over a decade old now, it's still a nice park to watch a AAA game at. Of course you could always go to DC or Baltimore and catch a game as well.

If you like golf, plenty of good courses to play at. Although it is really in Suffolk, Sleepy Hole was not bad when I lived there and the beach has, or it was supposed to get, a TPC course. And Williamsburg has Kings Mill where the AB/Michelob PGA event was/is held.

As for dining, plenty of places to eat as well as drink. I heard it might be closing but Steinhilber's(sp?) was one of my favorite seafood joints when I lived there

There are over 400 PIT alumni playing professional basketball around the world. There are prominent PIT alumni playing in the best professional leagues in Europe, Asia, Australia and in North and South America. More than 65 PIT alumni played in at least one NBA game last season.

                    Chesapeake, VA represent!

P-Town is not a place you want to go. Pretty much ghetto. As far as DC, it's about a 3 hr trip one way. Depending on the time you're leaving Tidewater you could catch some traffic crossing the Peninsula. Depending on the time you're leaving DC you could catch traffic on 95 South...hellacious traffic I might add.

Go to Virginia Beach. There's almost always something popping on the waterfront, even during this time of year, before the water is warm.

I'm in the Navy. I'm headed to Portsmouth Regional Medical Center. Well not the hospital itself but it's on that same base. I'll be in a school for combat stress and other psychiatric issues for 4 months.

And yeah I've also talked to a few people who have been to Portsmouth before and they all said it is very ghetto and not a good place to be.

95 is horrible I try to avoid it as much as possible. In 2007 when I went to Camp Lejuene I was stuck in traffic in the D.C. area for a couple hours.

But yesterday I was stuck in New York on the G.W. Bridge for a good 2 1/2 hours.

Thought I'd give this thread a bump. I've been here a week and have been enjoying it. Not the Navy aspect of it but I like the area. I went to VA Beach over the weekend and was in the Chesapeake area a bit today. Overall it's a nice area and I'm enjoying it more than Rhode Island already.

Portsmouth is in a rough area. There are like 4-5 strip clubs within a 2 mile radius lol. I think I'm going to enjoy the area for the next 4 months.

Speaking of the PIT, I'm here now and I'm sitting beside Jerome Randle from California. He's listed at 5'10 but he looks like he's about 5'6.

Oh, and just in case anyone was wondering, Ryan Thompson from Rider has been the story so far tonight. Had 20 points at the half. Aubrey Coleman from Houston has been terrible. He's scoring but he's throwing up any and everything. He's gotta be like 5 for 20 or worse.
