    Tragedy in Poland

    Even worse:

Poles wept before their televisions, lowered flags to half-staff and taped black ribbons in their windows after hearing that the upper echelons of the establishment lay dead in woods a short drive from the site of the Katyn forest massacre, one of Poland's greatest national traumas.

On board were the national bank president, deputy foreign minister, army chaplain, head of the National Security Office, deputy parliament speaker, Olympic Committee head, civil rights commissioner and at least two presidential aides and three lawmakers, the Polish foreign ministry said. Kaczyinski's wife, Maria, also died.
    Terribly sad.

I would think losing your president along with some officials is a pretty big deal. Very tragic.

Do you have to be so harsh?

The Polish people have had other huge tragedies but this is freshest on their minds so of course it's going to talked about that way. It's analogous to the the President of the US dying in a plane crash or being assassinated.

I can't imagine how much the people are grieving over there.

They lost their president, all military brass and top members of their government all at once just miles from one of the worst tragedies in their history, and on its anniversary.

                  Tragedy is an understatement.

Terrible news for Poland, and for Russia to a degree. That this happened on their land will always raise suspicions with the conspiracy theorists.

Not sure why the Polish had all of those military leaders on one flight either. Especially considering that so many politicians were on there too. Risk Management anyone?

I read over at airliners.net forums that the plane tried to land at the airport 4 times. There was thick fog near the airport and the pilot had to preform a go-around 3 times and on the 4th time is when it crashed. I wonder if the pilot was under pressure to land at that particular airport because the ceremony they were attending was only an hour later and of course the President was on board so he wanted to make it at that airport to get to the ceremony on time.

That's all speculation at this point but both the black box and cockpit voice recorder have been recovered so it will be interesting to see if the pilot was "pressured" into landing and what exactly was going on in the cockpit for them to preform so many go arounds.

Any normal civilian airplane would not attempt to land at an airport 4 times.

My dad who watches the Polish news told me that the control tower recommended they land in Moscow or a neighboring airport. Don't think this was confirmed completely but I'm sure we'll know in the coming days. As of now seems like pilot error. I understand the pressure situation, if there was one, but as a pilot you have to make the correct choice and not listen to others as you are the expert in flying. Then again it's easy to second guess sitting here.

Either way very tragic, especially considering why they were going there for. This will take a long time to rebuild considering all the people lost. The entire military branch must be in chaos. My dad also told me that the only one that can elect the head of the military is the president and with no president all these voids pose a problem.

Yeah I agree it will most likely come down to pilot error. With having the President and other leaders on board you want to be as safe as possible and not take any chances and ultimately your in control of the airplane and have to make the correct decision.

I would imagine the pilot had to be an experienced and top notch pilot to have such an important job but it seems he lacked judgment in his actions today.

Just a sad situation that could of been prevented.
