I'm all for sticking them in a small cell and simply feeding them and letting them read books. They should be able to exercise within the confines of their cell.

Prison should not be a place people don't mind going repeatedly, which is currently the case.

If you want them to work make them work off the amount of money they owe to taxpayers for their stay in prison.

If you failed to pay taxes you'd go to federal prison as opposed to Arizona state prison.

There are jobs in jail

Prison jobs are win/win for everyone.

As best as I remember, they pay something like 30 cents an hour to do jobs that would pay a citizen between 6-10+ an hour.

Honestly, I think a lot of people that commit another crime right after being released from jail/prison do it on purpose so they can go back to their 'home'. Maybe not people in jail as much as people in prison(as people that are in jail are typically only in there for a short period of time.. I think the max someone can spend in jail is 1 year, if your sentenced to more than that, you go to prison). If you spend 30 years in prison, that's all you know. That's all your life is. That's home to you. You wouldn't know what to do when you get out. All you've known the last 30 years of your life is prison. I just think a lot of them, after awhile, enjoy prison or get used to it to the point where when they do get released, they just want to go back.

You're right, I do not want that. What I do want is what's indicated in my original post. It's one of those "If I ruled the world, here's how I'd run it" type of things for me, just hypothetical.

And what you wanted would cause police to be murdered.

One of the main reasons the death penalty is highly restricted is so that only the most egregious crimes carry the highest penalty and even then the death penalty is more of a threat than a punishment.

If you always punish rape, murder, and armed robbery with the death penalty there's no reason to not kill any potential witness since the punishment is going to be the same. Furthermore, if you are going to be killed anyway, you might as well kill any police officer when attempting to escape since again, there's no higher punishment.

mandatory death penalty for lifers wont solve ANYTHING but create a real world Grand theft Auto free roam mode..
