    Autism

I met my mom's co-worker and his son today. I hadn't seen them in a while and I remembered that the kid (kid and kid he is 20) had some disease. Then I remembered that it was Autism. We were in a store at then and he was helping his dad with the shopping's. He was smiling and he is really kind and helpful, I think that he didn't seem to be autistic. When I went outside and was leaving they crossed the road and he wawed to me.

I'm just curious to know if you guys know someone who is Autistic.
I'm a finn so don't be surprised if I spell words wrong.

    Re: Autism

I know a guy that is autistic. He is awesome. He can't live by himself, but he can do a lot of things on his own. He's had a job as a salad maker/kitchen help at Red Lobster for over 20 years now. He can name the artist of every song he's ever heard, he can tell you who won the Price is Right for the past three weeks (including their name, what games they played on the show, and how much money they won on each game and overall, plus he never forgets a birthday. His memory is really amazing and he is just like a big kid, even though he is in his 40's now. His social skills are on a grade school level, but he is amazing and I'm glad you reminded me of him since I no longer live in the same city he does.

The agency I work for has worked with a child who has low functioning autism for about 4 years now (he's 16 now). He's non-verbal and can sometimes mimic words, but can not really formulate his own sentences. I've worked with him one on one several times. He's a fun kid but he tends to wander a lot so you have to really be aware when working with him. I just feel really bad sometimes because people see that can't speak and that he looks different and just assume he's hopeless. He's made a lot of progress working with our agency though. I'm really glad I got the chance to work with him.

        Re: Autism

See I dont really know where the line draws with autism. I dont really know what falls into the category I just know some can do way more than others. That being said, I believe I went to high school with a guy with autism.

He was extemely nice and always tried but was just slow in many ways. By his senior year he had come out of his shell and would spend his time walking down the halls saying "hello how are you today" to anyone who he had everyt talked to before. Once you had a random conversation with him in class you were his friend. He was one of those guys that is just so nice that even the cruel people loved him.

Graduation day ended up being really special. My class was one of those classes where everyone ignored each other and couldnt agree on anything. Our class president was one of those "Im running as a joke, I am going to disband student government" kind of guy. Point is our class couldnt agree on anything execpt one thing.......

Giving the guy with autism the biggest standing ovation of any other student by far. While you heard a few cheers when names were called as soon as his was called EVERYONE made some noise. Considering our class couldnt agree on anything, this wasnt talked about before hand just something that happened. I know I was happy for him, I can only imagine what his parents were thinking.

I still see him from time to time working at BK. He still remembers everyone and still talks to anyone he can. Always asking how past friends we went to school with are doing. Great guy and definatly special.

          My brother is autistic.

For the record, it's far more of a disorder than it is a "disease." You can't catch the autism like you can the herpes.

Yeah sorry for me being so stupid, but it can be found on Wikipedia for diseases: here's the link for there: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of..._%28A%29#Au-Az

How is your brother like? Is he like everybody else here had said that they seem to be happy and fun to be with.

              He's very high functioning.

You could talk to him and think he was odd moreso than that he's autistic.

This about sums everything up. He's not "********"; he can read, write, and do not abstract math (however he's not Rainman). On the other hand, he has no friends (though he could care less), uses the same joke over and over and over again, and gets fixated on the stupidest things imaginable.

Media wise, he's far closer to the kid from the show Parenthood than he Rainman or the kid from Mercury Rising.
