Re: Why do some sports fans get so much heat?
Once again, he didn't make you do anything. You're just sensitive and care way too much what other people think about you(on a message board mind you). If you're a Florida fan, be one. Put Cebby on ignore if it actually bothers you that much. All this is doing is making you look worse and it actually makes you look like the exact thing you're trying avoid; being a bandwagoner. A true fan isn't going to say 'ok im done being a fan of this team because someone called me a bandwagoner'. But that's exactly what you did.Indianapolis Colts
Indiana Pacers

"Those teams" are LOADED with bandwagon fans. It's not terribly difficult to see why bandwagonism often get assumed, particularly when the bandwagoning shows itself across multiple sports.Member of The OS Baseball Rocket Scientists AssociationComment

Nobody stopped making you a fan of anything. Root for who ever you want, don't let someone over a computer screen tell you who to root for.Comment

Re: Why do some sports fans get so much heat?
Those teams have been successful for long periods of time, so many people are going to become fans of them if the team they usually root for sucks.
And JJLinn, like who you want to like. Don't let people on a message board tell you what to like and what not to like.My Teams:
NCAA FB-Oregon Ducks
NCAA BB-Gonzaga Bulldogs
NBA-Portland Trail Blazers
NFL-Carolina Panthers
MLB-San Francisco Giants
NHL-Los Angeles Kings
Won't change this signature until Oregon wins a national championship (started 3/10/10)

Re: Why do some sports fans get so much heat?
When your favorite teams happen to be the best team in their respective sports and they are geographically far apart, it raises questions of whether or not you're a bandwagon fan. I have never understood the bandwagon fan. I have always felt that what makes winning so great is when you go through the tough times. The Blackhawks success feels great because it is after years of despair. It is nice to stay with a team through the dark times and come out with them at the end of the tunnel. At least that is how i feel about it.Comment

Someone on the internet, who you will likely never meet, made you stop rooting for a team? Really? I mean seriously?Comment

Re: Why do some sports fans get so much heat?
I don't know why it is even human nature to hate band wagoning, what is so bad with conforming when everyone tends to conform every day?.
But it is amazing- throughout my years no one has called me a band wagon-er even though these are the teams/colleges I like...Cardinals, Ravens, Heat, Duke and UNC. Just like everyone else I have my reasons...reminds me of the Shawshank Redemption.
But I fell for the Cardinals and Heat before they got to the top. Then for the Ravens- who couldn't fall for such energy and talent on the team that is Ray Lewis and Ed Reed...and then Duke and UNC, as a kid I wished to go there because of the prestige in academics and sports, and also a lot of my family went to UNC and I know Larry Brown...so that's how that all worked :S.
A real bandwagoner though, I doubt they would even say they had their reasons because most of the time, they just do not follow the sport and just saw the team win that big game and decided to follow them.Comment

Re: Why do some sports fans get so much heat?
Here are my favorite teams and the reasons why.
MLB - Kansas City Royals. Growing up in Vermont my friends were either Red Sox or Yankees fans. So to me the Royals were like Switzerland so they became my team and George Brett my favorite player.
NBA - New York Knicks. Only local team I liked just because they were local.
NFL - Dallas Cowboys. The close family friends we had when I was a little kid were Cowboys fans and Freda had a crush on Tony Dorsett. It just stuck.
CFB - Florida State Seminoles. In the late 1980's when I was 7-8 my favorite older cousin went to FSU and one of my favorite memories was watching their bowl games at my uncle's house. As a kid it was the helmets that sold me and it has never changed.
CBB: Georgetown Hoyas (and FSU now). This was my dream school growing up largely because it is where Patrick Ewing went, my favorite NBA player.
In Vermont there are no real local teams, it probably isn't a coincidence these were the teams on TV a lot when I was a child either.Comment

I decided a long time ago that he's just some actor who's honing his craft, working on some character beats, etc. Because starting with the whole "J.J. worship" thing, all of his ticks have been too Avant-garde to be legitimate.Jordan Mychal Lemos

Re: Why do some sports fans get so much heat?
I have a friend who is a huge Penguins fan and huge Pirates fan, but for some reason he hates the Steelers. He roots for the Browns and the Chargers despite having no ties to either team. I think it was more of a "want to root for the underdog" thing than anything else and wanting to go against the grain since almost everyone in the area is a big Steeler fan. Rooting for the underdog/perrenial loser is safe. If they lose, they were supposed to lose and no one cares. If they win, it's a big deal.
I've almost always been a fan of the home town teams. Not that I'm a huge hockey fan, but I've never liked anyone other than the Pens and just recently became a big Pirates fan after years of hating baseball. I've been diehard Steelers since I was able to understand the game. However, there was a period of time in middle school when I was a Tennessee Titans fan. I can remember watching them play against the Raiders in the regular season, and I had no idea how good the Titans were, but I loved how Eddie George and Steve McNair played. As it turned out, they went to the Super Bowl that season (and lost to the Rams). I followed them for another season or two and even had a couple Eddie George jerseys. My fanship for them pretty much died when they faced the Steelers in a playoff game, and I found myself rooting for the Steelers over the Titans.Originally posted by DaImmaculateONeHow many brothers does Sub-zero running around in his clothing? Re: Why do some sports fans get so much heat?
Anyway to the OP, I find it hard to believe someone who likes every historically successful team in every sport has a connection with each.
Outside of Seattle teams and of course WSU, the only teams I root for are the Chargers and Padres. I have family down there and my uncle (RIP) was a well-respected man involved in local baseball near the San Diego area. He always used to send me Chargers/Padres gear when I was growing up so they've always been a team I root for on the side. Plus, my 2nd favorite player of all-time is Tony Gwynn.Last edited by WazzuRC; 05-01-2010, 08:16 PM.Comment
