Weird incident that happened to me tonight

I was walking my dog tonight from around 11:30 to 12:30 . Obviously that is a little late to be walking a dog , but he is a golden retriever who basically needs at least one walk a day and I was gone for most of day. I also watched the end of the Tigers game when I got back so it was the time I happened to take him.

Anyways I live in a suburban neighborhood with no sidewalks and I have been almost hit a couple of times by drivers not paying attention. For that reason when a car comes I typically move off the the road just to be safe. One car tonight when I moved off the road happened to pull into the driveway just in front of me and since I had moved off the road I was technically standing in their yard. Anyways I got back on the road and continued on my way.

Fast forward to near the end of the walk and a cop car pulls up next to me. He asks what I am doing, I tell him I am taking my dog for a walk. He tells me the lady who pulled into the driveway called the police because she saw a person standing in her yard with a flashlight. She apparently did not see the dog with me and since she didn't I can understand her concern seeing somebody that late at night around her house. Anyways even after I tell the police officer that I was simply moving off the road when I saw a car he still gives me a hard time for whatever reason.

He asked for my information and than told me I was free to go. What I am concerned about is since he did take my information including mailing address does that mean he might send me a ticket for trespassing or something. I was just moving off the road to be safe and with no sidewalks there was no where else to go.

That certainly is strange. I'm positive you can contest this (and win) if you do get a ticket though, but unfortunately I don't know if the woman will be a great testifying witness in your defense if she didn't even see you with your dog.

Most likely he is just doing his job. There are a lot of nuts out there. Also you might want to change it to AM you put PM. That would me it was in the day time. Also, I wouldn't worry about it. The truth is they take you name just in case something happen earlier or something happen later on that night. It sucks, but it is what it is. MY suggestion is to not go out that late. Mostly safety issue at going at night.

Re: Weird incident that happened to me tonight

It was just really weird, to be have the cop grilling me like even after I explained what happened and he could clearly see a dog with me.

Another car actually pulled up as well right when I was about to leave and he asked me a couple of questions as well. That defiantly shows how low the crime rate is in Clarkston, because clearly there isn't a lot going on to have two cars respond to that.

Like I said I certainly understood the woman's concern because all she saw was a person with a flashlight late at night.

Like I said I normally don't go out that late to walk him, but I really didn't have time during the day. Golden retrievers are the kinds of dogs that need exercise every day.

Safety isn't that much of concern in my neighborhood anyways. Clarkston, where I live has a very minute crime rate.

Well that is probably why she trip to be honest I would trip too. If I saw someone on my yard and I didn't see that I forced him on my yard it would be a little scary. Now imagine it is a woman, it could be very scary. So you just have to chalk it up to a lesson learn. The lesson learn? I have no Idea, I guess don't watch the game walk your dog.

I wish I didn't feel the need to move completely off the road when a car is coming at night, but with the way people drive and how dark it is in my neighborhood(no streetlights or anything) I am not taking any chances especially after being almost hit twice before.

I used to just move to the opposite side of the road, but the second car that almost hit me and my dog was driving on the wrong side of the road as well.

I even had flashlight with me both of those times and neither driver still saw me.

If you go out at night you have to worry about people being tired or dunk. It is what it is. I used to take walks at night when I was newly wed. I had too she was driving me ****ing crazy and all I could keep thinking was why did I get ****ing married. Those walks were great, but they were at night and it was very dangerous were I lived. So when I figured out I was the problem too, my night time walks stopped.

Trust me, you are not going to get a ticket in the mail. The cop was just doing his job. They have to be thorough in those situations. You know you weren't doing anything wrong, but how does the cop know that?

I understand that, he was just doing his job. The part I had a problem with was his general attitude. It was very confrontational even after I explained what I was doing, what happened and that he could clearly see a dog with me. That was the part I didn't appreciate.

The only reason I was concerned about anything to be honest is because of how confrontational he came across. I could understand that attitude if he had pulled up and a guy with just a flashlight and no dog was just roaming about. That defiantly be red flag.

Not to mention the fact that if wanted to be a jerk he could technically say I was trespassing since I was standing on the her grass even if it was just barely off the road.

                      This.

I understand what you're saying, but the cop is probably just trying to make sure you're not lying to him. You could've had a friend drop that dog off with you after you saw that lady to make it look like you're innocent. Exactly like pjv31 said, the cop doesn't know if you're telling the truth or not. But, what you did was understandable and reasonable. If he gives you a ticket for that, I think it might be a little outrageous, but it is what it is.

you're not getting ticket. However, your dog is for public urination.

I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

                          Relax bro.

Guy was just doing his job...The confrontational part is normal. It tends to put guilty people in a defensive mode and leads to self incrimination as they try to over compensate.

I never liked that about cops. Whenever they talk to you in a regular tone it makes the situation a whole lot less tension filled and calm. When they're using that powerful, authority tone on you it really feels degrading. Especially when you haven't done anything wrong. But I guess they never know what they're dealing with, so I can see their perspective.

i wouldn't worry about getting a ticket . about 12 years ago when my son was a few months old , i was carrying him around walking thru our neighborhood & stopped beside a lake . a neighbor i didn't even know called the police because she afraid i would throw him in the water . they responded pretty quickly & questioned me for about 15to20 minutes . i was embarrassed but glad i had concerned neighbors . nothing else ever came out of it
