Re: Why do people judge you on what you drink?
Why would you care what people think about it, anyway?
I don't drink alcohol at all, and don't give a **** about what others think. I once went out with my brother to a restaurant-bar, and they have dozens of beers, from all over the world. So my brother orders some European beer, then the waitress asks me what I'd like to drink. I reply "Sprite", she replies: "No, seriously, what do you want to drink?", I reply again "Sprite", she says "Seriously? OK...". Looking back I'm regret I didn't call her supervisor over and complain. If you don't like what people order - don't be a waitress. Otherwise - shut *@#$$%^! up!My Specs:

In this case social mores are in play. If you aren't willing to conform to expectations, then you should expect to be judged negatively. If you don't want to be judged, then conform. It's not "the media"- it's human nature.Comment

Re: Why do people judge you on what you drink?
Interesting topic and one which has bearing on my life at this time. My new girlfriend's parents are big wine connoisseurs and I am most definitely not. It tastes like hairspray to me. She told me about her stepfather complaining that his waiter didn't pour the wine properly once. I'm not what you would call refined, and I sure don't like people who are pretentious. If he ever does this around me, I'm gonna have a hard time not laughing at the absurdity of it.
I haven't met them yet, but I sure hope they aren't disappointed in my total lack of interest in "fine" wine. I would rather drink a coke.Comment

Re: Why do people judge you on what you drink?
I am right there 100% with you guys on this judgement stuff. But I think my drink of preference may just top everyone's mentioned so far in the reaction it gets. I love to drink 40 ounces of Old English. When I go to buy them people act as if I'm a three headed puppy dog from Mars. Then the comments start about how I'm "gangsta" and all that. I am not offended, I think it's somewhat funny but pretty predictable.
And of course I often get asked why I have to drink that cheap stuff? Why? Because I like it that's why. It's got a high alcoholic content and it gets me drunk fast. I don't drink it for it's cool factor because honestly it seems to be borderline a joke within a joke in how people react to it.
I recently heard a guy I listen to on the radio say something I'm trying to live by. He said "You only will ever be happy when you can be completely indifferent to what people think of you." He said it's difficult because society trains you from day one to think about what you do and how others perceive it, but if you can manage to get to the point where you can live life for yourself, doing what makes you happy and be completely indifferent to what others think of your choices, then and ONLY THEN will you ever be truly happy with yourself.

Re: Why do people judge you on what you drink?
I've generally found those who will judge you for drinking a "fruity" drink generally do so to cover up some of their own deep seeded personal insecurities. Personally I prefer malt liquor drinks and mixed drinks much more than beer, and with the mixed drinks the alcohol content alone makes them considerably more manly than beer.Comment
