Walmart employee fired for stopping a shop lifter

http://www.heraldonline.com/2010/05/...hoplifter.html Fired for stopping a guy from stealing a $600 computer.

I understand the principle behind this, but c'mon. The 5 finger discount is alive and well at Wally World.

They usually do tell you things like this when you get hired. Don't try to be a hero because you'll likely get other people hurt. The company is just trying to protect themselves.

However, let's be honest. Nothing too serious happened. Now if the guy went off and people got hurt, the company could've covered their *** by referencing this policy. But can't we just overlook this policy for this lady considering the circumstances? Rules are black and white, I guess... too bad the world is real and it's all grey.

i know other stores that can't even confront potential robbers, managers alike. I won't name the place but if theres one place you want to rob, its place like that.

I hope someone else hires her for her brave actions.

Now if there was a gunman in the store with a stolen computer and he had a manager as hostage, are you not supposed to do what makes sense?

Gotta love the 10 registers for the 1500 people waiting in line ratio. what a joke walmart is

Re: Walmart employee fired for stopping a shop lifter

I work for The Home Depot and I used to be a Garden associate. I've received a call from the store manager saying, "There's a guy in a brown Carhartt jacket carrying a chainsaw and we think he's about to take a stab at going out the exit" My immediate response is to go stand outside near the outside garden exit and when the guy approached the door, I asked for a receipt... and he bolted. From that point forward I can't pursue nor can I physically try to prevent it from happening, but the least I could do is ask for the receipt. That's just common sense and anytime the alarm goes off at the door, there's no reason you shouldn't be able to ask for a receipt.. and generally speaking, customers have it out and show it to you anyways.

I'm either calling bull **** on this story, or there's more to it they didn't include. No company is going to fire someone for asking for a receipt.. Wal Mart included. I know it's a completely different company then what I work for, but the same common sense applies. There's no way in hell there's a policy that states that you can't ask for a receipt.. especially if there's still a hard tag/spider wrap attached to it and the alarm at the door is going off..

I think she wasn't trying to be a hero. She was just using common sense and trying to see what the guy was up to and asked for a receipt. I guess Wal-Mart employees should just let anyone walk out of the store, and just look away?

The story doesn't specify this but I am assuming she followed him into the parking lot and asked for the receipt, I don't think she did it right after he set off the alarm at the doors.
