The GM had worked with Best Buy for 15 years since he was in college and the other manager was a respected guy who worked in retail at Walmart and target in management. So, it can happen to anybody.
Wow. You'd think they'd know better.

This has nothing to do with Walmart or any other store wanting to protect their employees. They don't care, they care about protecting themselves from lawsuits from the employees, customers, and even the robber.

Stupid policy, but it is what it is. To fix it, put a cop at the exits and if the sensor goes off and you don't stop, you are getting tasered.

Sounds simple enough. One problem---these retail stores are cheapskates. That would cost too much (plus take a cop off the street). Easier to absorb the loss and pass it on to the honest customers with price increases.

They can pay an off-duty cop to work there at the door. Giant Eagle does that here. I understand why this is policy, it's a lawyer-will-sue-us based policy, but it's still silly for her to get fired. Why not just write her up instead? I'm sure some business will hire this woman though just for the publicity if nothing else...

Most likely the insurance company requires her to be fired or lose their coverage

When I worked in HS, they told us the same thing. I do remember one time, a guy stole something (I forget what it was) but my manager and the loss prevention guy tried to get him when he walked out the store, the guy took off, they chased after him, crossed a busy street and tackled him. Our manager came back with a tore shirt and grass stains on his pants.

To what keep a mental inventory of what's being stolen to see if it matches the list at the end of week?

It's a fake policy, they tell the Greeters to stop and stall any customer who sets off the alarm and has merchandise that doesn't show up on the receipt.

Technically a CSM is a Manager. She's in the clear, and has a pretty decent court case for wrongful termination.

She didn't forcefully stop the guy, she was at the door, the man set off the alarm, she asked to see the receipt, and said we'll get those tags (Spider Tags) off the box. He got weary and made a run for it.

I like this comment from the article's message board:

Unfortunately as mentioned this is not just a Wal-Mart practice. Most chains find it easier to roll the losses due to theft back into their prices and let the honest consumers pay for them. It's the American way! Let the honest people pay for all the crooks and the low lives that are burdens on our system. They will continue to use this paradigm until the backs of the working people can no longer support the load. I think we are closer to that day than we realize.

Reminds me when I worked at Best Buy and the managers were always going off on "stomping shrink." The interesting thing about most theft is its usually from employees. I'm also quite sure if one employee used forceful measures to keep another from stealing it wouldn't be a big deal.

if thats what is stated in the handbook or was communicated to her as the policy, then yes, it makes it very appropriate.

I didn't say I agree with the policy, just that its there and was expressed, she should follow it.

Wal-Mart employees are at-will and have no union protection. Not much chance of a successful suit for wrongful termination.

Sorry guys I was moving, just moved to Vermont from Indiana. Anyway.....I missed a good Walmart thread going on LOL. Yeah technically it does say don't try to stop people from stealing yourself, instead call one of the undercovers that is in the store or a member of manager.

And yeah CSM is a member of management, an hourly member not salary though. They only have enough power to do price over rides, but that's it.

I understand policy and all the legal matters involved, I really do. But this still leaves a really bad taste in my mouth. I really hate reading stories of people trying to the right thing and being punished for it. Just another statement to the sad state of the world today.
