do you typically stick to standard weights like 3 sets of 8 reps with 3 excersises per muscle?

One thing I'm trying to do is cut the time I'm in the gym when I'm there. I walk there and from my front door to the time I'm coming back inside is about 2.5 hours. I may take a look at those total body workouts like another poster mentioned.

Right now I do Chest and Arms one day, and Shoulders and Back the next and mix in legs here and there and make sure to do a 45min-1hr martial arts workout (bag, technique, wall pads). Also 8-10 min cardio before and after the weight workouts.

I think adding one day a week would make a huge difference I'm probably averaging only 3.
    OK here ya go...

    Day 1 (example):

    Chest:

Five exercises, the first three exercises consist of four sets, 8-12 reps each, the last two exercises are three sets, 12-18 reps each. The first three are what I would consider my "bulking" exercises, ie bench, incline bench, dumbbell press, etc.

Typically I'll take two of those exercises and superset on the last set as well (rep to failure, remove weight, rep to failure, remove weight, rep to failure, done).

The last two exercises I use for "toning/tweaking". I'll do things like cable fly, dumbbell fly, pushups, etc.

    Triceps:

Four exercises, the first three with four sets, 8-12 reps, the last one with three sets, 12-18 reps. The concept is the same with the first three exercises for bulk, the last for toning/tweaking/getting a good pump.

The reason I do less total exercises is the triceps already get a decent warmup/workout from all of the chest work.

    Shoulder:

Three exercises, four sets, 8-12 reps. Less exercises because the shoulders get worked hard with chest already (and I have a bad left shoulder, so I have to take it slightly easy there).

So that same idea and workout translates over to day two as well, as I do the same for back that I did for chest, the same for biceps that I did for triceps, and the same for abs that I did for shoulders.

For day three with legs, I do the same for legs that I did for chest and back, and abs I'll just add in an extra exercise, making day three my hardest abdominal workout.

And that's my weight routine. I do each of those days twice a week (although if I only have five days available, I'll cut the leg day down to once) along with the cardio split I mentioned earlier, plus the 9-12 min of jumping rope at the end of my weight sessions on days 2 and 5.

I know it sounds like a lot, but honestly, the longest I'm ever at the gym lifting is 1 1/2 hours, which is usually Day 1 and 4... or if I'm having a lazy day

The rest of the days I'm only there usually an hour. Of course, I also don't waste time talking to people. I'm there for one thing only, and that's to work out.

      Re: Weightlifting?

I over-train very easily so I have really scaled back my workouts. I lift weights on a 2 on 1 off 2 on 2 off split (i.e MON ,TUE, THUR, FRI) and on spend about 20-30 minutes in the gym. NOTE: I don't rest longer then 1 minute between sets or exercises.

      MON: Chest/Biceps
      TUE: Legs
      THUR: Shoulders/Triceps
      FRI: Back

Personally I use Mass Peak (Protein shake) has over 66g of protein for about a 2 week supply...But I turn it into a month. I take Jack3d along with creatine elixir and NOS super pump pills.

Definitely stretch out your supply of Mass Peak. Your body will only metabolize around 30-40 g of protein effectively at once I believe. Beyond that, you won't be getting any added benefit. Don't be afraid to have some carbs with that protein post-workout to refill your glycogen stores and to spike your metabolism and recovery overall.

haha geez. Yeah I'm 23 now. I thought up this screen name when I was about 15. Weight lifting and diet have been passions of mine since I was young.

Trying to see if there are people still lifting out there. I just got back into lifting when I found a nice accessory that seems to help bring more control to the upper body: Fat Gripz.

I've been doing the modified 5x5 with a couple of added exercises for 3 times a week don't like to have all my time taken up because I'm getting older and there are things to do.

I'm 5'8" 155, but I have been working out for at least a year now. I've gotten my bench press up to 185, but I feel like I've reached a plateau and I'm not showing muscle definition except after a workout. Any tips because I don't want to run a lot because I'm Not looking to loose weight.

If your progress has stalled, it's most likely your Diet, or Recovery habits that are off. Maybe both.

If you're putting in the reps in the Gym, but not gaining size or even losing weight. You're not getting enough calories. You might need to up your Protein intake. (1-1.5 grams per Lb of body weight) and also increase the amount of Carbohydrates to replenish Glycogen levels, and give you sustainable energy for intense lifts.

If you've been on point with your diet and you're pretty sure you're getting the right Macros. It could be your Recovery. Are you getting enough sleep, 7-8 hours per night? Are you over stressed? Find ways to get more sleep, and reduce stress... as those factors can inhibit the Anabolic process.

It may be the recovery aspect. I work out usually six days a week, but each day I focus on different body parts. However, I also attend college and work anywhere from 25-40 hours a week, so sleep is usually 6-7 hours.

That's a full week seriously. I have to agree on the testing part. What does your regimen look like? Consistent each week?

I don't know what your program/split is like; but I can just generally recommend that maybe you cut back on the Volume. For instance maybe drop to a 5 day split, or stay at 6 but cut back on some of the accessory movements, but keep your Compounds first. If your rest day is towards the end of your working week, maybe re-arrange it towards the middle.

Ultimately you have to fiddle with your routine until you find that perfect balance of time management for work and school, and getting better sleep.
