Well, there's a damn bat in my house

So I'm laying on my couch, reading OS on my netbook, and I see a shadow behind the screen. I look up and I think I see something flying in and out of my living room door. Surely that can't be right. I get up and look around the corner and there's a damn bat flying towards my face. I'm man enough to admit, at this point, I screamed like a bitch and ran into another room slamming the door behind me as the bat chased me down the hall. So I put on a coat and some leather gloves and look around and don't see it anywhere. I look high and low for the damn thing, shaking curtains, kicking furniture, etc. Eventually I discover it in my basement, and that's where it is now, with the door shutting it in. I guess I'll try and shoo it out in a minute.

Thing is, I have no idea how it got into my house, I don't see how I could have missed it being in here before tonight, yet every window was closed, doors locked, fireplace flue closed, etc. Only thing I can figure is he flew down the exhaust vent for the stove hood, there should be a damper in there but I've never looked.

    Wish me luck.

At least it wasn't a crow.
    Blind to this impending fate
We let the world carry our weight
It's back breaks with every mile
But we all live in denial

If you can deal with it you're my hero. I can't even deal with cockroaches.

        Good luck man!

Re: Well, there's a damn bat in my house

          Success!

My basement door faces my back door, so I cordoned off the path from the rest of the house with a sheet and went into the basement. After turning off the light close to the steps and turning on the lights on the opposite end of the basement, it flew around the steps but wouldn't go up. It kept landing, but not in a place I might be able to get close enough to pick it up (I had on my welding gloves I use for the fireplace/grill), shining a flashlight made it fly around again but still it wouldn't go up the stairs. After landing for what seemed like the 30th time, the flashlight wouldn't get it flying again, so I picked up something small, tossed it in the bat's direction and it flew right up and out the door.

It's funny you bring up Mitchell, that's almost exactly what it was like at first, except I'm 6'5. Looking around the corner and seeing a bat flying towards your face is scary stuff. Once I figured out it was in the basement it seemed a bit less scary, lots more room to fly away from me.

I just thought of another spot it could have gotten in from, last year I had a pipe leak inside my dining room wall so I had to open a hole. Well, it was behind a large piece of furniture, so I wasn't worried about fixing it right away and had actually forgot about it, but it's there and I will have to fix that asap. It could have also just followed me in without me knowing. Who knows.

Glad you got rid of it.

We had a bat in my house once when I was still a kid (4th or 5th grade maybe). I remember it had apparently gone in my little sisters room and freaked her our so she went down to our parents room and got our dad. The bat was still iny sisters room so he shut the door and put a towel under the bottom so it couldn't get through the crack. He then came in my room (mine and my sisters rooms were in the attic which was divided into 2 rooms) and, despite the fact that I was still sound asleep and totally oblivious to what was going on, work me up and took me down to my parents room where both my sister and I spent the rest of the night between our parents in there queen size bed. I remember it was to crowded and I didn't sleep very well that night. Our parents actually told us it was a bird (I imagine my sister didn't get a good look at it since it was the middle of the night and I never saw it) and it wasn't until several years later that I found out it was actually a bat.

Damn and I thought I had it bad earlier today, screaming like a little bitch and running from a moth.

... It was a big moth.

Didn't he have to have a couple of rabies shots or something?

good to hear you caught it.

ugghhh....bats are just flying mice in my opinion. They give me the willies.

Yeah, he had to get some for precautionary measures after that.
