Yep, you can't buy fresh produce in many neighborhoods in this country, but something created in what is essentially a lab with negligible nutritional value and lots of chemicals that were unknown to people 50 years ago can be peddled at 3 different outlets within 2 miles for $1 apiece, at a huge cost to the health of that person as well as the nation as a whole. The worst part is that those costs (similar to the environmental impact/toll of fossil fuels being calculated into gas prices, as they are in Europe) aren't factored into the prices, otherwise that $1 double cheeseburger would cost $15 and people would eat more carrots and the problems would solve themselves in most cases. Poor people in the US eat garbage food because it's cheap and available, while poor people around the world often have fresh produce and no clean water while their upper classes eat like the American poor, feasting on burgers/pizza and ruining their country's health indexes, turning them into mini-US consumerist outposts... It's ****ed on a number of different levels.
I'm glad to see Farmer's Markets seemingly popping up everywhere and some real consciousness being brought to the food scene, but we've got a massive ****ing hole to dig out of after 25+ years of processed garbage being sold to us both as a means of enjoying oneself and also as a path to health (as is the case with "light" products that are void of nutrition and leave you in a worse condition than if you had eaten the full fat version). Misleading and downright malicious on so many levels, and we paid for it all with our tax dollars, government subsidies, and our direct purchasing decisions. Ain't that a bitch?
