Re: How did you finally decide what to major in?

I started off as a Supply Chain Management major, but after talking to my advisor for a couple weeks I switched to Human Relations and a minor in Criminology.

I just felt that HR was a better fit and the classes are pretty interesting and it gave me opportunities to help out with some of the Outreach Centers in the community of Norman as well as Tulsa. It's been a fulfilling experience so far.

Wanted to do something with sports and a journalism major gave me a chance to cover D-1 football and basketball for four years while I studied. Don't want to pursue it after school but love the major and it's a good major to use for my post-undergrad.

I've been wanting to be a sportscaster since I was a little kid. UA has a good communications school and their broadcast news majors have a good success rate of getting jobs upon graduation.

So I when I got accepted to UA, I declared my major at orientation. Never changed it and LOVE my job.

I'm thinking about doing something in the math department as in Accounting or Financing or just basics in Business Management, which would be a better option as in getting a job out of college or does it matter. If anyone could help me out with this I would greatly appreciate it.

Intrigue, job market, and how much I liked the subjects.

I am satisfied with my decision.

Easy. I initially wanted to do graphic design (because I could draw), but I struggled badly in the pre-reqs. However, I was always a good writer, so I chose English so I could BS. I can't count the number of exams I passed without opening the book.

That would have been something I would have loved to do, but I don't have the voice for radio lol. I actually worked for a football season with a HS football broadcast crew keeping their stats. That was really fun! Our first game actually we didn't have our software yet, so I kept both teams rushing and passing stats by hand on a legal pad of paper. I was 3 yards off

Oh and I registered for a load of CIS classes. I guess I'll see how it goes. No friday classes and only one class past 2:00 for now.

Now I have to decide which division of CIS I want to go into!!! ahhhh I got a semester to do that though.

Pretty much the same boat as you, man. I'm entering my sophomore year of junior college and I've got a 3.92 GPA after 36 credits but I'm undecided on a major.

Re: How did you finally decide what to major in?

Well, I pretty much narrowed it down to two choices:

1.) Engineering - What my parents wanted me to do; more money in the field
2.) Meteorology - What I wanted to do and what I love; less career opportunities

And, in the end, I picked meteorology. It's not as lucrative of a field as engineering in most cases, but it's what I love and what I'm most interested in.

And since NC State is a pretty good meteorology school and it's not too far away, it was the obvious choice. Plus, it has a graduate meteorology program. UNC Asheville has a meteorology program, but it's smaller and is the only other meteorology program in the state. Oklahoma is oftentimes regarded as the top meteorology school, but it's a bit far away.

In regards to the OP, I would go with Computers Informations Systems. Psychology isn't a very useful degree, so unless it's something you really love, I don't think it would be a wise choice. Although, if you really don't know what to do, then college may not be for you. There's a lot of college grads out there working at McDonald's with huge student loans. You can still get good jobs without a college degree and you won't have the burden of loans. Plus, there's trade schools and stuff like that.

I am still undecided on what to major in. I originally majored in Business/Accounting, but decided that's not what I want to do with my life. Since I didn't enjoy that I decided to major in Sport and Rec Management because I have always had an interest in sports and since I will have a minor in business; it helps to differentiate myself from others who pursue the same thing because they love sports. I am not exactly sure what I want to do still but I have some idea since my dad and my brother have worked in the field. I know from looking at numbers that a sport and rec degree isn't a high paying degree, but hey you only live once so just be happy. I figure if I work hard and have a passion for it eventually it will all pay off.

I would decide by what you wouldn't mine doing for the next 25 plus years. Look for a major that leads to a good career. That is my advice.

That is important to like what you do, in reality though, life is expensive, and if you plan on owning a home, having kids and having a wife. You need to make a good amount of money too. Life is expensive, and there a lot of people that don't like their jobs, but they do it, because it plays well. That is why I tell people that are in college have fun, but also take it serious. That way you can get a good job with your degree.

Regarding your example about your girlfriend, that's good to hear. Something viable, well paying (at least fresh out of college), and relatively quick (just a 2 year technical degree). When people say technical degree, I'm always thinking of electrician or plumber or something of that sort. But there's so much out there that I just don't know about that could end up being very interesting to me and still well paying. I've always had this thought that I'm going to end up doing something that I probably didn't know about until I started working my way towards that career. I really have so much research to do regarding my education. My primary focus so far has been to save money for schooling, a car (I walk to work currently), and in the next year, my own place. I haven't really looked into WHAT I'm going to be doing when I get to school (since I've been so undecided) and afterwards.

I've always been interested in biological sciences so I knew I was going to be a biology major in college probably since I was a freshman in high school. To the OP, you could do a double major if you really wanted to or possibly major in 1 field while minoring in the other.

And superjames, I have an aunt and uncle who work at N.C. St. though they both work in the vet school so it's highly doubtful you'd ever meet them.

Glad to help. My gf got her B.S. degree in hotel, restaurant and tourism and while finishing it up decided she wanted to do something in the health field. She used the connections she made in her major to go to China to be apart of the Olympic village and works part time/full time (summer months) at a local country club.

But sonography will be what pays the bills. It's 2 really intense academic and clinical years...it reminds me of med school.

A lot of people go to tech school to become nurses, which puts you in better standing than someone that went to a 4 year school b/c you have experience starting out.
