    Re: OS Running Thread

I'm in the Army (1st Cav) and we normally run 4-6 miles every other day at a 6:45-7:15 mile pace.

I really don't like running and only do it because its mandatory. My two mile run time depends on how my knees feel.

Anyway, I'm hoping some guys in here, hopefully some cross country runners, have any tips (besides just running) that helps them get used to distance.

I'm currently going back to sprints and hills but I can't get myself motivated to run 6 miles by myself.

I don't run much anymore (arthritis at the ripe age of 25) but I just bought a new pair of workout shoes from the Nike Outlet. "Nike LunarElite +2" I believe is the name of them - holy crap they are the most comfortable pair of workout shoes I've ever owned.

I personally vouch for Newton running shoes, a newer brand that does a really good job of making sure if you overpronate that you land with a nice mid foot strike and become a more efficient runner. The 2013 line should be releasing soon and they are very popular but expensive shoes but they are a good send for when your legs are feeling sore.

I've ran in both the entry line Sir Issac's

and most recently the Newton Distance.

Get your feet tested at a running store to see how you land with your stride (or get a buddy to record you on a treadmill) and from there you can figure out if you need a neutral shoe or something to help you with stride.

I don't know if there is an answer to that question of distance. I know, for me, there's not much interest in running more than 5-6 miles. I like running but have never been into long-distance runs, and I don't know if that will ever change.

For me it never changed. I liked running with my teams in High School (track and cross country), but can't run by myself now.

I just don't enjoy running that many miles, I don't get that "thrill" that a lot of people get naturally.

I find I need other sports (soccer, tennis) that keep me running but also have a goal/point. I just can't run for fun anymore. Maybe I just burned out in HS, but don't enjoy it.

I started running a lot about 2 months ago when I decided I want to change my diet and get into exercising regularly.

Currently I've been running around 2.5 miles a day consistently for the past month, and I'm probably going to bump it up some more soon.

Thought I would bump this thread to see what everyone is up to. Any plans for Fall races?

I decided to sign up for a marathon on October 12, 2013. I have been running 40-48 miles each week the entire summer and feel good enough to give the sub 4 a run for its money.

Ran 20 this morning, here are the splits:
                9:19
                8:51
                8:51

Nice job Kev, to run such a negative split like that, especially during training is huge for confidence.

I was all geared up to go to race in Amsterdam but am waiting on my visa (in Saudi now). Running at 4:30 am to beat the heat (you can't really). I'll be doing my next marathon in January either here or in Dubai. At least it will cool down some by then.

I'm still adjusting to running at an even higher altitude. I moved to Colorado Springs from Denver a little over a month ago, and while not a huge difference, that extra 1,000 feet of elevation is something you do notice when running.

I can tick off 4-5 miles on most runs and I'm right at the 9-minute/mile mark. No plans to run any races; my work schedule is pretty chaotic so hard to commit to something right now.

I've about a month into my college cross country training and I've had a serious bump in mileage. I'm a mid-distance track guy so I'm not used to hammering out 70 miles a week, but that's what it's been. On Saturday I went on a 16 mile run in 1:57. I don't remember my exact splits per mile, but they were all at or below 7:15 or so with the last one being a 6:30. I've been training to run a sub-26 minute 8K for this year, so I'm making progress, but I'm just not quite there yet. We'll see where I'm come late October when the big meets start rolling around.

Ran the Charleston Distance Run 15 miler in about 1:55 a few weeks ago. It really felt good to knock it out in under 2 hours. The guy that won was from Kenya and he knocked it out in about 1:16. That's crazy.

Out of curiosity, what is the adjustment like? Do you have difficulty breathing or get lightheaded from the change?

It's a little of both, but lightheaded feeling goes away after a few days. The breathing takes a little longer to acclimate when exercising, especially if you don't get out and run consistently. Your wind just gets zapped from you earlier than normal.

I think I've finally adjusted now and don't feel as tired/winded when I hit that 3-4 mile mark. Riding my bike and walking my dog twice a day have helped.
