    Re: OS Running Thread

Whats up OS runners? I decided I wanted to try and do a 5k on January 1st 2013. Now I know that's nothing to most of you guys but this time last year I was roughly 300 pound but have gone to 229 and I'm thinking by that time I will be 200. I always wanted to run a marathon but was always doubtful because of my weight but I think its time to cross this off my bucket list.

I haven't jogged at all this year because I get pretty bad shin splints and I just recently got over a bad case of plantar fasciitis earlier this year on both of my feet. I was told that maybe I should work on my form to help prevent shin splints and I have inserts for my shoes to support my arches.

I was hoping if someone could lend some advice how I should start training for it. Should I start on the treadmill or start running outside? How many miles should I shoot for at first and how I should gradually move up the distance?

A half a mile outside. Then move up to a mile and so on.

Good stuff Mike, we all have to start somewhere.

Check out http://www.halhigdon.com for some different training programs. I think most people will agree that following a program is the way to go and helps running with a plan. Best idea is to build up slowly and not overdue it. Best of luck!

My buddy suggested I go to a run store and get a analysis on how I run so I can get the right shoe for my run style. Have you guys done this?

Yes, and it's a good idea if you are just starting because having the right kind of shoe is very important.

Great idea to go to a real running shoe store. In HS while running track and cross country I'd always go to a real running store and they look at your existing shoes, check wear to determine if you need a different style shoe, etc.

Did a mile today. First time running/working out in months. Me and a guy I work with are going to try to stick to this until spring at least (thats when work starts to get hectic and our schedules get crazy) hopefully by then it will go from a "need to" to a "want to" and I will makr time for it even without having someone to run with.

9th Marathon finished today with a PB time of 2:49:24. I am extremely happy with my time and have come a long way since my 3:35 first race I did six years ago. Tonight is celebration night!

Runners High = I finally get it. I just got done doing 5k in 29 minutes without walking for the first time. That last mile was painful but I pushed through.
Now I gotta work on my time but got plenty of time before my first race.

Early December and I've still been running in shorts. Its nice, but definitely a little weird.

                              congrats, that's awesome!!

I have never enjoyed running, ever. In fact, I'm more than comfortable saying I absolutely hated long distance running.

But in the last couple months, I've really started to commit myself to getting in better shape and healthier in general, and the more I run, the more I've come to feel that runners high that I previously assumed I never would. I figured some people had it, and some people didn't, and I was one of those that didn't.

But the more I run, and the more I run for the right reasons, the more I find myself in a different state of mind. And that's what it really comes down to imo.

There will always be pain if you are pushing yourself, in running, in lifting, in everything. If you are truly pushing yourself beyond your previous limits, you will experience pain, period. But pain itself is not inherently bad. It is the suffering we associate with that pain that causes so many issues. Pain is physical, suffering is mental. And only in the last couple months have I begun to experience that "runners high", and only because I have started to distance myself from the suffering of running, even while the pain remains.

I agree Juice. What's weird is that I want that pain because once I push through that I get to the next level. Pretty much that's how I'm looking at life because there's no progress without pain and pain is temporary.
