I think of it this way...if you enjoy OS and get something out of it, whats the difference in paying $20 a year for it vs paying $50 a year for Xbox Live?
Anyways....
Back when I joined OS, it was a pretty "exclusive" site. There were some great discussions that occurred, laughs were had, and there was very few, if any, "look at me" posters who enjoy disrupting the flow of conversation because they have the anonymity of the internet. Sure there were disagreements, but not to the point where ever other thread was locked or loaded with infractions.
By paying $20, you would find that you would have only people who are interested in mature conversation, devs may feel that its "safe" to once again have mature interaction with hardcore gamers and not have to fear being flamed for one thing or another. If someone was indeed banned, you wouldn't have to worry about them creating another username just to act a fool and be an internet tough guy.
The site wouldn't have to rely on member counts in order to survive. The forum could return back to what made OS so popular in the first place, the fact that it offered up varying opinions about a variety of topics from games to life, minus the ignorance and immaturity.
OS could once again be about quality, not quantity.
