    Re: Must-Eat, Can't Miss Restaurants/Diners/Dives

Haven't seen anything for Denver... here's my list, the majority are right near downtown or within 10 miles of it.

Domo -- the absolute best Japanese country food you'll ever have outside of Japan, very reasonably-priced for lunch (and dinner too, considering the quality... but still, go for lunch!), amazing selection of dishes you don't see anywhere else. The restaurant is also beautiful and feels like sitting inside a hollowed-out tree or something... loads of Japanese antiques and cool stuff all over the place, they also have a Japanese garden (outdoor seating in it), a Japanese historical/cultural museum, and an Aikido dojo where the head chef is also one of the only Aikido masters in the US trained by the last great teacher. Anyway, the food rules and all the other stuff just rounds out the experience.

El Taco de Mexico - Ridiculous tacos that are as authentic as you get, straight from Mexico City. Amazing green chile (it's different than most around here, traditional Mexican style rather than New Mexico/Colorado-style), amazing menudo, giant relleno burritos, tortas, tamales, etc. Just a great place... cash only.

JJ Chinese - Traditional Hong Kong food, you can get almost everything Chinese in origin that you've seen on episodes of No Reservations and Bizarre Food w/Zimmern here... adventurous eaters heaven. I LOVE their salt and pepper fried duck tongues (great at Star Kitchen too) and they offer a wide variety of unusual fish and proteins that you rarely see outside of China... they have shark fin soup, etc...

Star Kitchen - The best Dim Sum and traditional Chinese food in Denver in my opinion, though Super Star Asian is a close #2. The Dim Sum is just unbelievable, almost everything on the menu is perfect in my mind and I'm always eating about 50 dumplings and feeling like I need to be wheeled out after a meal.

Viet's - Another gem on the Federal/Alameda Strip of Awesomeness, this is my new favorite Vietnamese place and they have things like goat curry that you don't see often at other Vietnamese places. Great family-style meals for the whole table, amazing pho, and everything is very well-priced, as is typical with Asian spots.

More upscale restauranty places (Domo is pretty upscale but I grouped it with the ethnic restaurants):

Fruition - My favorite restaurant in Denver that isn't one of the spots above, you'll have some of the best meals of your life here, and they're all made in this tiny-*** kitchen. It's a popular place and I'd reserve a table beforehand, but it's simply amazing food. They also started their own farm last year and (as far as I know) have been providing a lot of their own produce starting this year. The prices are what you'd expect for fine dining ($13-$25 ish for entrees) but it's not as bad as some places and the food is the best I've had in town.

Il Mondo Vecchio Salumeria - This isn't a restaurant, but these guys make wonderful artisan salumi products like pepperoni, prosciutto, duck breast proscuittini, lamb breseola, etc. If you like salumi and cured meats at all, make a stop by here on a Friday and load up at their Dock Sale... their products are expanding nationwide to certain gourmet food stores soon. Top notch stuff and they're great guys.

GastroCart - My favorite mobile food vendor in Denver, they produce amazing food on the street every weekday (and someitmes on weekends for special events and occasions). Stuff like Piedmont, NC-style headcheese sliders, lamb gyros with guajillo peppper-mint foam, etc. and everything is pretty much around $5, with some snacky items being $2-$3.

Biker Jim's - You'll see him on the next "No Reservatoins" I believe when Tony Bourdain comes to Denver... Tony nearly married Biker Jim he loves the sausages so much (pause). He gets amazing collections of meats from all over the place (everything from rattlesnake to bacon to elk) and turns them into amazing sausages, which are then cooked on a flat top, split down the middle, and blasted with these amazing Coca-Cola caramelized onions and some cream cheese, which is dispensed from a caulking gun. Don't skip either condiment, they're essential to the awesomeness.

Osteria Marco - Pork palace, basically... they do Italian salumi, housemade cheeses, panini, pizzas, and entrees. They do a whole roasted suckling pig each Sunday, which shockingly I haven't made it to yet. The best thing in the world pretty much is the Porchetta Cubano, which is their amazing ciccioli (Italian pulled pork tossed in duck fat to finish), some prosciutto, and provolone on a panini. Un****witable pork heaven.

Sushi Sasa - Many people would send visitors to Sushi Den, but I kinda hate that place even though the fish is amazing and it's very well-prepared... just feels like a damn nightclub and it's nearly impossible to get a table without waiting outside in the heat/cold like a dog. Anyway, I always recommend Sushi Sasa because the head chef is better (IMO) and it lacks that ridiculous atmosphere. The Omakase (Japanese for "cook for me") there is always one of the best meals of my life, just amazing stuff. Wayne Conwell combines Mediterranean influences with his new-style Japanese sushi (he worked for Masaharu Morimoto in Philly for a few years) and produces some of the most inventive and tasty dishes I've had the pleasure of eating.

Rack and Rye - Weirdo menu that I love and everything on the menu is $10 or under for lunch/happy hour, including their housemade short rib pastrami and their fried chicken w/ cornbread waffle. For whatever reason it gets iffy reviews on Yelp and the like, but I've never had a bad meal here and I pimp this place to all my friends because it's inventive and delicious.

Venue - This palce is great and pretty popular... I can recommend it for the Happy Hour mussels alone, which are the BEST mussels I've ever had. $5 for am amazing bowl of mussels in a ridiculous broth complemented by over-roasted tomatoes, chorizo, and tarragon. But the real genius in the preparation is that there's a big hunk of crusty bread at the bottom of the bowl that soaks up all the goodness, which you eat with a fork at the end. Just genius...

The Squeaky Bean - Open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, it's an upscale cafe that has limited seating and normally is a little tough to get intno these days. Amazing lunch selections with sandwiches that rock my world.

There's Denver. There's a lot more here since we have a great food culture here, but those all get the Stumble Seal of Approval.

      Re: Must-Eat, Can't Miss Restaurants/Diners/Dives

Here are some "must eat" places in the Twin Cities area:

Brasa Rotisserie (Minneapolis/Saint Paul) - great meats, slow cooked (pulled pork, roast chicken, pulled chicken, and beef) along with Caribbean sides, a great Sangria, awesome beers on tap, and a Masa cake to die for. Everything is locally sourced and natural, and the "family" style concept is great for families and friends alike.

Punch Neopolitan Pizza (various around the Twin Cities) - if you like pizza, head to punch. Personal sized 10" or so 'zas, cooked in an 800 degree wood fired oven for a whopping 90 seconds, add a good salad (or if your at the original Highland Park location an appetizer) and you have a meal fit for a king. It's thin crust, high quality, Neopolitan style pizza at it's best.

Bangkok Thai Deli (Saint Paul - Frogtown area near University Ave. and Dale) - best...Thai...ever. This isn't Minnesota hot, this is the real deal. Checkered table cloths, oily curries, spring rolls, soup, rama, Pad Thai, you name it, they have it. The most expensive item is near $10 and you'll be sweating buckets of joy as the heat hits your insides. Simply great!

The Wienery (Minneapolis) - like hot dogs? Burgers? Pat is the owner here and he's a one man show. It's the dingiest of dives (believe it or not they have jail bracelets of their customers over the counter) but the food he cooks up on is little stove is second to none. Everything is made to order, with hand cut fries, real Chicago dogs, a spicy chili for those fries, and the Italian combo...Italian roast beef and a hot sausage stuffed on a bun with sauteed onions, peppers, and cheese. Don't sleep on the Selamu either, a garlic and habanero stuffed, hand formed burger (like every one on the menu). I've never seen such a motley crew of people...from buttoned down businessmen, students, homeless people being fed for free out the back, and me and my six year old.

Christos (Saint Paul) - a great Meditteranean place with a phenomenal lunch buffet, along with great Greek food and drink for dinner. The location in the old train station is also breathtaking. My wife and I hope it remains once they begin using the station again in couple years for the new light rail line.

New Scenic Cafe (Duluth) - a rotating menu of local ingredients that is reasonably priced and offers great views of Lake Superior. The quail and rabbit entrees were particularly good.

Hell's Kitchen (Minneapolis) - best breakfast in the Cities. House made peanut butter, bison sausage, and sausage bread. Not to mention the hash and omelets. (The Hell Burgers in Duluth, formerly Hell's Kitchen, are awesome as well).

Little Szechuan (Saint Paul) - best authentic Chinese in the Cities. I love the Dan Dan Noodles and Chong King Spicy Chicken, and have never had anything let me down. Order only from the authentic menu though, not that Americanized fried crap that most people know as "chinese food".

Holy Land (Minneapolis) - a great little deli/grocery store where you can pick up hummus, pitas, falafel, you name it. The Kafta (?) Kabobs are to die for. I think they have a lunch buffet as well.

El Burrito Mercado (Saint Paul) - an authentic Mexican restaurant and grocer all in one. You can't really go wrong here, and the Habanero salsa on the salsa bar is a permanent fixture in my fridge.

Man, I love living here. There are countless other places that merit a mention but the above are a good start.

        Cougar Country - Pullman, WA

        Sellas - Pullman,WA

Two of the better local restaurants in Pullman. Cougar Country has some good burgers/fries/sauce and Sellas has great bread twists and calzones.

To those of you in the Twin Cities... my favorite late night drunk eatery has to be Santana Market on University... They have the best cheese curds and drunk food ever. I'm pretty sure their seasoning has something in it that gets you addicted.

Starliner Diner - not been there yet but have heard great things about it.

Mellow Mushroom - this is a chain, and if it's like I think it is, then it's just marginal pizza.

Rofini's Pizza - never heard of this place, want to go but Westerville is far away.

Carfagna's Kitchen - co-sign, this place is awesome.

El Vaquero - co-sign again. Really good Mexican with copious amounts of food and chips. I recommend the #141, chicken in ranchero sauce with cheese, rice and refried beans with tortillas to place it all on. Yummy.

Tommy's Pizza - hands down my favorite pizza in Columbus. And a bonus, their Dublin location delivers to where I live.

ODogg, I have been to Schmidts and Thurmans, still need to try the Ohio Deli. Schmidts is just incredible if you like German food. Just about anything on the menu is great, make sure to get the sauerkraut balls for an appetizer. As for Thurmans, bring your appetite. Even the smallest burgers are huge. Here's a pic I found (but did not take) of one of their sandwiches:

Also, you want a tip for a dive that's got great burgers? Try Johnnie's Tavern aka Johnnie's on the tracks, located on Trabue Road. It's called that because it's literally next to railroad tracks. You walk in and the place is a ****-hole but trust me their burgers are incredible. I go there at least once a month and it would be more often if I didn't live so far away.
              That looks good.

Awesome thread. Especially for someone like me who's on the road 2-3 weeks a month. Some of the places I've stumbled across on my travels:

                  Boston, MA
Grill 23 - The absolute, hands down, best steak that I've EVER tasted, and I'm usually hyper-critical of steak restaurants.

Legal Seafood - Best clam chowder I've ever had.

                  Honolulu, HI
Azure - I love shellfish, but usually HATE regular fish. Still, we tried the five course dinner, and had a yellow tail sashimi that LITERALLY melted in your mouth.

                  Augusta, GA
Sheehan's Irish Pub - Looks like a typical Irish bar, but the menu makes it feel like fine dining without breaking the bank.

                  San Francisco, CA
Bix - Good luck finding the place, but the meals and the atmosphere are amazing.

                  Dayton, OH
Sima - Best sushi I've ever had.
Through music, you can live forever...

Archibald's BBQ-Despite what you've heard, this is the best BBQ joint in the southeast not Dreamland.

Nick's Original Filet House-Filet's are incredible. House salad dressing is great. And the Nickodemus drink is killer. Rocket fuel that tastes like fruit punch. Hunch punch, if you will.

Bottomfeeder's-Good fried seafood place. Also a great breakfast spot.

The Waysider-Best southern style breakfast in town.

My gf is from Utah and is obsessed with a place called Cafe Rio. They're located primarily over on that side of the U.S.

If you're ever in Iowa/Cedar Rapids... Zoey's Pizzaria in Marion, IA has delicious pizza. Or if you're ever in Iowa City on the Ped Mall partying, make sure you get a gyro from the gyro stand.

Zoey's is the best pizza I have ever had... and I've had a lot of pizza from all over the country. And, they're just as well-known for their "Zookie", which is a chocolate chip cookie served in a pizza pan and covered with ice cream and sundae toppings. Probably the best meal you can get in Iowa, and one of the best in the Midwest.

Some other places in the Cedar Rapids/Iowa City area (maybe if you're around for a Hawkeye game or pass through on I-80):

The Irish Democrat has some of the best burgers you can get, period, at very reasonable prices. And right across the street from it is... The Starlite Room, which is literally tied with it in terms of burger quality. The Starlite Room is a little more lowbrow, but just as good quality. Also, I know this is now becoming a semi-national chain, but Panchero's was created in Iowa City and to this date I have never had a better burrito than from Panchero's. Fresh pressed tortillas and the best queso sauce you'll ever have.
