Time to Man Up and Go Under My Crawl Space

We bought our house in 2003 for a very good price, understanding it was going to need some work. It's an older home, built in the early 1940's. Now, the house is solid and framed in oak. However, through time things have worn down and sometimes I find that I have to go underneath the beast and address some issues.

I hate it. In fact, I'm afraid of doing it. For one thing, we have what they call camel crickets. They look like spiders but they jump all over the place with no aim or direction. The next thing of course is it's dark under there. Dark, cool and quiet. Any noise sets me off.

Needless to say, I have to gear up to go down there. I put on a long shirt, jeans..making sure my whole body is covered. Heck, I'd even wear my son's Iron Man helmet if it fit.

So, I can relate if you have done this. If you have no issues with it, you are a bigger man then me. The only thing I find is the more I do it the more I build my confidence. But just yesterday one of those camel crickets jumped on me and I poured my whole neighborhood a tall glass of profanity that is probably still echoing through the greater Charlotte, NC area.

Just make sure you covered up and immediately once your done, dust yourself off really good outside, then go take a shower and wash your hair.

I have one of those industrial blow fans, so I always run that into the hole for a good 15 minutes before I go in. Damn thing is so powerful it will blow any critter out of there, along with the spider webs and heat that gets trapped in there.

If one of those things jumped on me I'd punish it before I killed it. I'd go all Hostile on it.

If one of those things jumped on me, I'd slap myself so hard that it would be a knockout.

Ahh those things, we have those in west Alabama. We get them in our basement near the fireplace. I always called them pool crickets since they look as they though hopped in our pool and their color washed off.

And I know what you mean about controlling their hopping. They randomly hop into our pool and end up in the skimmer since they can't swim. I'll be chillin on a float and boom...one hops onto my arm.

I'll say this though, I'd much rather have them than horseflies. Those damn things are the root of all evil. Late in the summer they swarm our pool.

Those must be common to the area because we use to have those kind of spiders here too. Get Dotson's pest control, they take care of that stuff. Did for us.

Re: Time to Man Up and Go Under My Crawl Space

Long story short. We lived in a 200 year old cabin in the Appalachian mountains of Tennessee. The cable guy that came to hook up our cable literally pissed himself while trying to get out of the crawl space under the cabin. I heard all the co-motion and met him in the yard as he was running for his truck. He told me he ran into a nest of snakes in our crawl space.

Needless to say I didn't want my wife to hear that if it was really the case. I asked him to calm down and relax,I would do fix the problem with a little help on his end. I grabbed my .45 and started for the crawl space. I asked him to hold the light for me as I went under. I got in there and saw a huge black snake and a few smaller ones in the same corner of the crawl space. I didn't shoot them because my brain kicked in and didn't want myself or the cable guy to catch a ricochet. I got a bayonet and a broom stick and went to work. Came to find out they were all Copperheads. I also ran into a couple of Wolf spiders down there.

                    I feel your pain.

Well, at least I know others have had similar experiences and can relate. Very funny stuff.

Dave,we moved in less than 3 months. Between the Wolf spiders and finding a 4 ft snakeskin in the attic attached to my sons room, my wife never slept. She wasn't happy so Jackdog wasn't happy. Know what I'm saying.

I can completely relate. I killed a rodent in the crawl space because I heard something gnawing on the floor area right by my kids' room. I was so upset. I put out a rat trap and mouse trap. On day one the rat trap tripped with nothing to show. I reset it and the next day it caught a mouse by the tail. I took a shovel and cut its head off.

It was like Gibson's character in The Patriot where he just hacks away at the guy. I was so furious with that mouse.
